Got a message from VW today to say they had found what was causing the fault

They've ordered the part, should have it tomorrow and they're going to call me when ready!

Will let you know what it was as soon as I know.

Finally got my car back today!

According to VW it was the alternator that was the problem, it was over charging the battery, which sent the car into limp home mode.

They've offered me a full valet for free, guy said it takes them about 6 hours to do, but makes the car look like new inside and out (including cleaning of all upholstery). Is it worth letting them do it or is it basically a vacuum and wash with a gritty sponge??

OMG - this sounds exactly the same as mine. I was driving along and then suddenly a lack of power! I've taken it in and they're looking at it. I've had 3 or 4 calls saying they can't find the fault. It's not the air valve meter thingy and it's not the turbocharger. SOUND FAMILIAR? They're now tying to say it's the timing belt. I had it changed at 60,000 and i've just recently had a big service on it. Will ask them to look at the altanator! fingers crossed

Exactly the same thing, it obviously wasn't the alternator then!

this is the sort of thing I hate, they didn't fix the problem so they should take the alternator back and give you a refund.

for some reasons garages can still claim money they don't deserve, it's a weird world!

It was done under warranty so I didn't have to pay, but I can see how something like this could get very expensive!

What worries me even more though is that if they can't find the problem, do they just pick a random part and say "yeah XXXX was the problem" fit a new one and send you on your way!!

ah, good news about the warranty. still worrying though.

I hate all these stories of VW getting the wrong diagnosis and people still having to pay

It's not the cost of the parts thats worrying. It's also not the fact that VW can charge you to the teeth for parts if you weren't on warranty.

It's the fact the car might suddenly lose power overtaking or on the motorway! Go over there and demand them to fix the car properly, or take it back and give you your money back.

Mine's still at the dealers. They've now ordered some kind of valve that they say "might" be the problem. The old valve has a carbon soot build up, etc. and is not working correctly. Let's wait and see. P.S mine doesn't have a warantee so it's going to be expensive. Just had a big Â£500 sevice a month ago as well, so I have a feeling I'm going to be broke!

pah. swines. all this electronic wizardry and it actually hinders the diagnostic of problems sometimes!

if it doesn't fix the problem, don't pay or get a refund. the stealers should learn they can't charge for parts that aren't fixing the problems even if they think that's the problem! we should make a stand

Mine's fixed hooray!

The problem with the lack of power was the EGR valve. She now runs perfectly.
MOT: had to have my pads and discs changed, and my lower arm bushes.
all that with the new valve came to a grand total of Â£738

Time for a new car me thinks. Have got my eye on a new Eos.

sounds like it could be the egr valve blocked or staying partially open, this occurs alot on cars at work (alfa romeos) and causes the symptoms your talking about
