My GTI niggles

Post by Dee-vub »

as some of you know iv recently done my GTI conversion.

Couple of problems with it.....well first off when i drive it, put the handbrake down, the light stays on and when i am moving lets off the most annoying beep in the entire world!!!! I believe its likely to be a dodgy sensor or something?? Is it?? Is there a fuse i can temporarily take out to get it to stfu??

Also, got my gear linkages sorted, but it looks like they have moved again, cos all was fine but now 2nd gear is a struggle.....AND to get 1st gear i have to go into reverse :? Now that is weird!!! Now also means i dont have reverse anymore, is this just a case of getting the linkages adjusted again??
Cheers

its the linkage, theres two rods that control the forward and side to side motions of the gear stick.

one of them cannot move and you can't adjust that really...

the other however has a bolt going through it and that can be shifted, so have that rechecked...take a photo if you can cos it'll come in handy for me!

the beep sounds annoying, i heard it for the first time tonight...is it a warning to say the boot is open, or seat belts are not plugged in? or handbrake sensor is f****d? :?

let me know on the fuse for that too..lol.

I get the handbrake beep on mine, but only when i forget to take the handbrake off when pulling away. So must be a dodgy sensor on yours

One of the lads on eastsidevw said it'll be a dodgy sensor, so just earth it and it'll kill it. Will stop it working like, but it aint important!

Dubprince, the The exlamation mark warning light is the warning to say your handbrake is still on.

haven't you used your car's own interior loom when doing the conversion?

If not then its two very small wires going to a black switch under the centre console...probably to the base of the handbrake mechanism on the passengers side.

I double check the wires later dude...

i'm pretty sure when i looked at this sensor last night, it worked just fine...so donno why it beeps...when the handbrake is down, the switch is open and when the handbrake is up...its pushed in.

the wires are blue/w brown stripe and brown. :D

if you bridged these, then it'll seem like the handbrake is up all the time so the light will stay on surely??

Handbrake beeping?? what's that? I've never heard mine do it.

You have a parking light, that beeps if its on (when the indicator level is up or down the parking lights come on) and when you open the door that beeps to tell you its been set to on.

right...lets clear this one up!

This light bleeps about 3 times and keeps flashing there after.

It doesn't just stand for the handbrake sensor, it also stands for:

ESP problem,
ABS unit problem,
Brake fluid reservoir level sensor.

The reason mine stays on is because i have no abs on my car, so the clocks flash up ABS and if that comes on, so does ESP (for a short while) and the red flashing light is there to signify a brake problem...which there isn't.

I had a mate pop over mine last night and hook up his modis to my car to see if he could get into the clock pd ecu and disable: airbag, abs and esp...but was unable to do so.

Can someone confirm, this bleeping only comes on when you start the car and then it just flashes right!?

Sanj, i found thesource of my problem

You are right, it also signifies the brake fluid resevoir and i have a leak so my brake fluid is running low....which causes the red light to come on and constantly bleep at my.

I am currently trying to figure out where the leak is

phil...check all flexi hoses near the calipers, the hardlines too...theres a good chance it won't be near the reservoir unless you cracked the bottle.

has your car got ABS then?

its just, the lower spec mk4's didn't come with abs...so figured it might be the same case with mk5's...and thus another reason the light could be on.

its a nice day today...come on phil...find the leak! lol.

i still don't bloody know what those connectors are for up front you know...proper sucks.
