engine breather,

have a look under your airbox there should be a pipe comeing from the back of the engine towards to top. and it should go inot the bottom of the airbox. check that if its not that then i havent a clue..

I have a strong small of petrol on my 1.6ltr AEE engine polo 1997. Checked the breather pipe and found it had come off the air filter housing. Hope this cures the problem.

my 1.4 AEE has worn piston rings, causing the combustion gasses pass the rings and pressurise the block, which causes a strong smell of petrol/oil/exhaust coming from the crankcase breather, and if the oil seperator becomes blocked itl just start releasing the gasses to atmospher, hence the smeel, well that was in my case anyway

Just to confirm that I cured the problem when I re-attached trhe bottom pipe to the air filter housing.

You really need to watch out for this!!! When experiencing more "blow-by" then normal (blow-by is air-fuel mixture entering the carnkcase slipping past the piston rings) then the oil get's "lean" due to the fuel being added to it. When the oil get's too "lean" it doesn't lubricated good enough as it was intended, making your bearings wear out far faster then supposed! With whatever kind of trouble that can arise from that :(
