Rust on sills

Post by poloking »

Went to see a polo gti today and it had rust showing on the door sills. How serious is this problem if I get it sorted? (of reoccurance?)

Its when you open the door, on the corner. Tiny bubbles.

The sills are part of the chassis on the GTi. I would imagine that rust, depending on its exact location, could possibly be a sign of accident repair work. I say this because this is what happened to my car, rust developed in the rear offside wheel arch late last year (three years after I bought the car) which through further investigation led me to find evidence of accident repair work to the rear offside quarter :(

All sorted now though!

Poloking, if you look at the picture below can you tell us where the rust is?

Cheers

And welcome to uk-polos!! :D

Cheers Si GTi! :D

The rust is on the bottom left of that picture. On one side of the car, you can actually see the rust when the door is closed also.

If a Polo has rust at this age there has got to be something wrong. I would avoid it at all costs unless it's being given away!

Isn't the whole body of the mk5 polo glavanised, which should mean no rust, unless there has been damage repair etc.

Well the Polo was a W/2000 model so isn't a bit of rust normal for a 7 yr old car?

Not really.

As Haris says the body should be galvanised which I think carries something stupid like a 25 yeard guarantee

A Mk5 shouldn't rust. The only rusty bits on my car are tiny bits in the engine bay but not the bodywork of the car

Either that or it's spent a lot of time near the sea :)
