VW Polo Cuts Out Intermittently

Post by jaydoubleu »

I have a VW Polo 1.6 GLX 1996 (P Reg) 74,000mls.

The car runs well apart from a niggling problem of cutting out intermittently.

I can be driving along fine and the engine/ignition just cuts out - I pull into the side of the road, switch off the ignition, switch on again and the engine re-starts immediatly.

It sometimes dies as though it is about to cut out but I can (sometimes) manage to get it to cut in again if I change down a gear - this can happen 2 or 3 times within 20 or 30 yds and then it will drive great for the rest of the journey.

I have recently had a diagnostic test which gave an error message of "00519 ma,fold Absoltute Pressure Sensor Not a plausible signal occurs intermittently"

This resulted in having the M.A.P Sensor replaced.

However, yesterday I took the car on a journey (approx 40 mls round trip) within approx 1.5 mls the problem returned, the car ran great for a further 15 mls before reoccuring.

It is allways when I am in 5th gear and mostly when going driving up hill.

This is the general pattern of things.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how this problem might be resolved.

Hi NOZ

Thank you for your input.

Just to update you - the car has been running fine now for a couple of weeks however I didn't want to get back to you untill I had given it a decent journey - I have just come back from a trip of approx 100 mls and the car has been faultless.

What do I put this recovery down to?

After the garage had had a couple of attempt to sort it out (at a cost of approx £80 to £100) :( I decided to try something myself - wait for it ...... RedX ... and I have had no trouble since - cost under £3 :P .

Hope your problem has been sorted.

It happened again today!

The day after I put in £10 worth of Supermarket (Tesco) petrol, which has got me thinking about my next move?

A. Should I stay off Supermarket petrol or

B. Should I upgrade from 95 to 98 octane or

C. Go back onto using RedX.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the above.

Thank you.

Hi, i have a polo 6n2 1.4 and my engine kept cutting out when i dropped to low revs. after investigating i found out that it was a substance that had built up in a tube heading to the throttle body or sumink from the air filter. cost me £20 to fix and havent had a problem since in months. Hope that helps

ok guys, little update with mine.

For ages I hadn't done anything but the other day I made a trip to vw so thought i'd get a temp sender for £28. However, it hasn't made any difference other then doing it slightly more!

The next thing on my list is the idle control valve, a new one comes as a whole unit and costs around £300, which won't fork out. I need to know what the parts actually are so I can have a look at my one. Anyone able to shed some light or have pics?
