Throttle Body cleaning help/advice

Post by Rupy »

Hey guys.

I'm gonna do a cold airfeed for my BMC in the next week or two and thought i may aswell do a throttle body clean too. I know i need to take the BMC off and then use a cleaner and cloth...

But i've read (in the 10k boost thread) that people have had problems since the clean...

So can someone give me advice on how to do...ie engine on/off...revs is on? what cleaner? how much spray etc etc as i don't wanna mess the engine up.

Is it actually worth doing??

Cheers
Rup

I used a really good Carb Cleaner from halfords. It comes in a purple can and is made by a company that begins with a W (i cant remember its name!!!)

Other than that, redex can be used intensively by pouring it straight into the throttle body while the car is at fast idle - works very well. Tells you exactly how to do it on the bottle :)

Depending on its current cleanliness, a clean can do a world of good if its dirty, and you should notice better acceleration. But if its not too bad, it wont hurt it!

Just dont stop revving the engine - or youll flood it with cleaner, and it wont start again!

Hope this helps!

I'm not too keen on this revving and pouring...

See the stuff in the purple can..do you put it on a cloth and clean it out with engine off or am i mistaken?

You do it first when its off, then spray it in while its running - its safe trust me. I use it all the time on my mates cars when i give them a service- works a treat :D

I cleaned my TB last weekend.

I sprayed the (Hycote) Throttle Body Cleaner onto a toothbrush and scrubbed the inside of the TB with it. And wiped up the oily residue with a lint free cloth (old T-Shirt). To clean the back of the butterfly i just held it open with my fingers.

This method may have taken longer than just spraying the carb cleaner in and reving but I reckon alot less gloopy crap will get into the intake if its cleaned by hand.

My exhaust emissions warning light came on after cleaning the TB, but it went off today without me doing anything to sort it. :D

I can't believe the difference that £4.00 and 10 mins effort has made to driving my GTI. Its so much happier in 1st and 2nd at low revs now, and the annoying metallic whirring noise that plagued me has stopped.
