What I tend to find is that you should keep the car wet through out washing to avoid water marks then when it comes to drying go over a panel once or twice to remove most of the water, but don't keep going over since then it'll start to smear as you say. Hope that of some help, it becomes obvious when you've done it couple of times

A microfibre drying towel is MUCH better than a chamois (I've never had much success with those pieces of hide). There are plenty of good ones out there, I have this (it's as big as a bath towel) and it is very good. The Eurow waffle weave one that Alun posted is very good as well, as are the Poorboys and Sounus towels.

To prevent smears and to keep the just-waxed look of the car, I recommend spraying each panel with a quick detailing spray (the spray that comes with the clay kit) before wiping or patting the panel dry.

Yeh I saw that pray stuff adertised in FC. Bridges the gap between wash and wax it was saying, will have to check it out. Which would you recommend then, the microfibre towel, or waffle cloth?

I recommend the large Microfibre towel that I posted up. I wouldn't recommend the Meguiar's one though. Whenever I used the one I had felt like I was inflicting marring and swirls in the paintwork :?
