My Gti has a strange knocking....

Post by Rupy »

Hey guys...need advice.

I've spoke to a mate who's good with lowered cars and he said this sounds wrong.

I bought the car with a knocking that occurs when i turn the wheel left/right towards full lock. Before i bought it dave had the top mounts replaced...thats when this knocking started. Thought this might go away over time as the mounts settle in. Does this sound right?

What else could it be? car is really low on coilovers.

could be the anti roll bar knocking on the driveshaft mate! i've had this on my ibiza, sorted it with a new set of droplinks to raise the arb a tad. i'd get that checked out first because it is quite common on lowered cars!

the noise hasn't gone so it turns out that even tho the arb was touching the driveshaft, it wasn't creating the knocking.
the mystery goes on! well over a year now!

Mine used to knock when turning to the right and towards full lock. But after a few weeks it stopped and hasn't come back since :)

Edit: just thinking about it now... when i bought mine it had a similar noise on full lock. Turned out the mechanic didnt tighten the whell bolts properly after he changed my Clutch. shock.gif true story.... go check your bolts!

There's a thread on UK-polos.net where a few people have had a knocking thats the spring in thier coilovers?
Its both left and right..
I know some people will disagree with me here... but it aint normal, get it checked.
I would have said your CV joint was gone until you said both sides... more than likely your driveshaft knocking.

I get a sound which can only be described as metal scrapping when I do full lock slowly. Think its either the springs or the top mounts movin a little. Is this the same thing as above? It doesnt happen when im driving tho :S

I would say that perhaps the spring is staying still when you turn the wheel, and knocks when it finally releases. I had springs that did this once. try greasing up the top and bottom bits where the spring sits, see if it helps.

It's on FK highsports.

Dave said that it never happened with the old top mounts....

It'll not be too tight or anything will it? The idea of the spring just pinging sounds plausible.
