err, becuase it's a different gearbox. Firstly the casing is different which would cause some fitment problems.
Secondly, if you did somehow get it to fit, the gear ratios are different. The Tdi has a lower gear ratio, making a lower top speed in each gear.
The TDi box is also bigger and heavier - the polo GTi engine bay is cramped enough.

Cool, answered me anyways lolsorry, I sounded a bit snippy there. Guess I'm just stressed out with all my own gearbox problems!
I've done a lot of searching too on cheaper ways to get a replacement box, and the golf was one of the first things I looked at, but it won't fit. The other option someone suggested was to use the casing from a smaller engined Polo, and swap the internals.
Not a bad idea if you can get one, but chances are a scrappy will want 100-200 for a second hand gearbox, then you've got about £300 for rebuilding internals assuming they arent too wrecked.
So for the great majority of unlucky GTi owners, it's either a rebuild (if it's only internal problems) or a refurb unit if the casing is cracked (ace gearboxes)

Yeah, it would be good to know. I've heard the main weakness is due to a plastic bearing or something like that.

I'd bet there will be a local guy that does boxes who'd be able to help you out on strengthing this up. There's a guy in Edinburgh (TAV Transmissions) who is pretty good and helpful - I didn't pursue the matter further cos it's game over for me and the Polo. I've got a new job and the commute is a 60 mile round trip, so I'm now drinking from the black pump.
