Hi all,
Got a mk3 polo coupe 1.3 and ever since i got it has made a loud tapping/ticking noise and just can get to the bottom of it.
I have carried out the following work.
Changed the tappets,
Several out flushes,
Changed the exhaust manifold gasket and downpipe gasket,
checked for air leaks.
checked the injector.
Now I am lost for ideas and was wondering if it something more serious like piston slap or big end wear.
Any ideas.
When I changed the tappets it did go quite for 30 seconds. But started agian. Could the oil pump not be pumping properly?
Cheers

Loud tapping/ticking noise
This is another thing that makes me wonder. Every couple of months the plark plug on number 1 cyclinder cracks and has to be replaced. Have a look. Could this be an inlet or exhaust valve sticking?
No.2,3 and 4 look great like this.

BUT. No.1 looks like

What do you guys think?
Cheers

Re: Loud tapping/ticking noise
Forget what everyone tells you. This engine does this its piston slap, you will notice the noise changes slightly when you vary the load. Mine did that all the time, from 34,000 miles up til when I sold it. Its just the piston skirt flapping on the cylinder wall and will not cause you any problems.gazmangti wrote:Hi all,

Your plugs show that the engine is in great shape! Your cracked insulator is nothing to worry about, provided it doesn't keep happening. Its often due to the way they were treated *before* they were put in. Also its advisable to find out what happened to the bit wot fell off.... But its most likely it just got blown out staright away.
My mum has a 1.0L though, and its never done it, still doesn't the question in that case is why doesn't it when all the others do!!!! (In other words, I sometimes worry that it doesn't)
