Smoothing the tailgate...

Post by Si_GTi »

OK guys and girls, give me a little help here, if you can!

I'm going to smooth the tailgate on my Polo at some point after the Polo Show '07 and before Ultimate Dubs '08, in order to delete the GTi badge and the VW roundel.

... but I will be keeping a handle because I have de-locked doors and will need to retain some method of getting into the car if my keyfob battery gives out one day!

I will either keep the 6n2 standard handle in place - smooth it into the boot? - or my preferred choice at the moment is to fit a 9n handle and transfer my lock and barrel. The 9n handle looks far better IMO.

I've uploaded a UHQ image of the rear of my Polo for any photoshoppers to have a play with if you wish. Its not the best shot but I'll take some more pictures at VW Festival tomorrow.

Your feedback is appreciated :)

Cheers

Not sure about keeping the handle Si, I'd have to see a pic. We will have to wait for one of the photoshop gurus

Mk5 handle would look cool, but if you wanna go for that deleted look then the 9n handle is the way to go. It looks really nice.

Much work involved?

Thanks Tim, that is quality, exactly what I wanted to see

Max, I thought about the Golf mk5 badge/handle like Virdee has done but it would be a lot more expensive than the 9n option *I think* plus I haven't seen the 9n handle done yet...

I love the totally smoothed look but ideally need some way of getting into the car if the key stops working (could take out some roadside assistance with the AA I suppose!)

If it was totally smooth, how expensive do you think it would be to have a boot-pop solenoid mechanism wired up to the rear wash-wipe button on the end of steering wheel column stalk (I still plan to de-wiper the rear of the car).

9n rear handle is way out in front at the moment, in my mind. Looks tasty! I know a guy who can do the work for me.

Cheers

I think the Mk5 Golf handle will cost the same as the 9n handle, because if you think about it, the original handle will have to be cut out, then new 9n welded in, and the new mechanism installed, which applies the same to the golf. The only difference is that the golf one would sit higher

you'd also have to smooth over where the original handle was tho!

9n handle looks good. Thats what im hoping to do soon - just without changing the handle, just smoothing the badge off

I'd go with the 9N handle Si, the MK5 Golf boot handle looks real nice but it's been done a few times now so won't be any different to anything else out there :D

Actually looks not bad with the handle. I'd keep the original though as the 9N doesn't go with the lines of the car imo
