hey guys,
Just thought i would let you know that vw have redesigned the cover to take a rubber gasket, instead of the other one which is £120. Apparently the new parts are off the Mk4 golf/polo can't remember which.
The parts codes are:
036103475H - Rocker Cover - £14.74 + VAT
036103483D - Gasket - £10.72 + VAT
036103483G - Gasket - £10.72 + VAT
there are two gasket one for the spark plug area..
And as you can see this is a lot cheaper..
Any problems with the codes let me know.
Regards
Tom

Well my polo is 1996 P reg its the mk 4 1.4 16v.
The was from the main vw dealer in Woking... I did do a search last night for the part on other vw parts websites but they haven't got any, instead there selling the old replacment.
Something else i don't understand is, the cover only cost 15 pounds and there charging 120 pounds on the old replacment? Day light robbery...
Hope this helps

what???
I have a oil leak coming from the oil gasket under the rocker cover.. i have been quoted 200 pounds for the labour... it was from a garage near my house who specialise in engines. I have put it off for a few months now as its fairly expensive and VW quoted me 500 hundred.
I have been told the gaskets are cheap, but havent got round to buying one. I also wanted to buy a polished rocker cover or have ago at buying one and then polishing it before it was put on... i.e why i asked the question.

i understand now...
But £200 - £500 for a rocker cover gasket change is stupid... i think you could do it yourself if you've got a touque wrench.
Next time try and explain yourself..
try this website for a gasket https://secure.gsfcarparts.com/shop/results.asp
If vw is charging £500 that means its goning to take 5hours when i could do my own in an hour...

AWWW...
the price was for labour.. from the first garage...
and the price from Vw was a quick quote from a mechainc of how much it would cost all together... they said some bull s**t of having to take the hole engine apart and how it wasnt a easy job.
I think my problem stems from some idiot mechaic putting 2 oil gaskets under the rocker cover... i didnt have it done the owner before me had it done or possibly the dealer i brought the car off... Well... whoever got it done.. didnt check.. and its leaking... and now i have to pay to fix it... i.e why iv left it for a little while.. im going to bite the bullet.. but need time off work as i use the car for work.. i also need to get the money.. and my student loan isnt for a few month.. so right now im stuck.. but im guessing.. this converstation.. of how cheap the part is.. might mean i talk to the mechanics in my area who specialize in engines.and just get the thing done.

when you speak to the mechanic ask them what they need to do because all you actually need to do is undo the screws in a certain order, remove cover, remove gasket, clean where gasket residue if any. Put new gasket onmake sure you haven't left anything in the engine, place cover on. Put screws in and tighten lightly, then get torque wrench set to tightness and then tighten screws in the correct order until the wrench clicks. job done...
the mechanic is talkin c**p the engine doesnt need taken out... What you want to do is go to halford and get the Haynes manual for your polo, it'll tell you how everything is done...
i know what you mean about money i'm a student too. but seriuosly thats a rip off... unless there's other stuff they need to do..
But get the haynes book, its the best thing for any car it'll tell you every little repair replacement etc..

AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!
i can not beleive it!!!!!
FOr F SAKE!!!
the car is at the garage right now... the flippin bolt snapped on me......
i was undo ing the bolts for the rocker cover to replace the gasket... and then ... snap... the F ING thing snapped.
the thread was stuck in the enginge and the top part of the bolt came out.
Luckily i had a safe mechanic i was talking to just now .. that restores engines.. he said he would drill the thread out for me ... for £30.
But... why.. do things like this have to happen???
