A droaning noise when braking hard

Post by 1 GTI »

When im doing about 70mph and I got to brake hard there's a droaning noise coming from my passenger front wheel. I've got the G60 brake upgrade aswell but thats been done for months. When im driving at normal speeds its fine, and it's only when I got to brake hard from higher speeds.
Another thing I've noticed is that the front passenger brake gives off a lot more brake dust and the disc has worn more than the drivers side. Anybody know why this? I've had the pads off today to check but they are fine and also they're fitted correctly aswell. Could it be a bearing starting to wear out? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi mate,

I would try bleading the brakes if not i would say there is a fault with that brake caliper.

Even though the brake caliper is working and moving freely? The rubber seals are all in order aswell. It's got me puzzled this have to be honest, lol

Yeah, when my caliper seized it worked ok for a while at normal speeds and normal braking... only really locked when I broke hard. I'd probably never have noticed the problem if the pad hadnt slipped and started to make a noise as the wheel turned....
if theres more break dust from one pad, and the disc has worn more then that caliper is definately staying on longer than it should.

Brake hard, speed up, let go of your steering wheel and break hard again, if it jerks to one side then the caliper stayed clamped last time you hit the pedal.

Take the wheel off and check the rubber sleeves that cover the piston bolts, if there is a hole anywhere in one of those or it doesnt seem airtight, then water has gotten to the bolt and rust is causing the bolt to stay in when its pushed hard. Sort this before your pads slip, trust me ive gone through this.

It cost me €15 from VW to get the new bolts and sleeves with lubricant in a little kit... I can get you the part number tomorrow if you need it, the box is still below in my car.

Checked and greased all bolts again and also sleeves and perfect aswell. When I brake and release the brake the car stays straight, doesn't pull one side with either thats what makes me think it's not the caliper. If it was the caliper then it should be pulling one side, but it doesn't just keeps in a straight line :?

Starting to sound like a bearing so... it'll get worse, the car will start to sound like a derailed train after a while.
