Panel Gaps/Build Quality rant

Post by Mouse_GTI »

I'm not sure if it is just my car but I am well annoyed. The headlamps don't align with the wings properly, one indicator is sticking out further than the other, I got a 1 cm gap between the bonnet and the top of the headlamp on one side. Managed to break one of the lugs on my indicator unit, the lock for it doesn't work and is made of cheap plastic. The indicator has a sharp bit at the bottom has taken chunks out of my new bumper already (although to be honest the bumper ain't too great in the first place, it's got little dimples on it and isn't finished to a high standard). Had to get the holes cut out for my washer jets - that cost £55 and they didn't even cut them big enough so the washer jet covers don't sit flush (even after filing them down)

My car just looks crap and I just keep thinking what is the point? How much do I have to spend just to make it look half decent. You'd think it was french with all these odd gaps. Not sure it's worth taking to the Polo Show. Sorry about the rant, just not confident in my car at the moment.

havnt had any of the problems you've got with the indicators (although mine have all got gunk around the seals of them! is that possible to get rid of?!)

but just thought you needed a post to say dont give up!!! from looking through your progress update you've put alot of money, time and effort into getting your car up to tip top shape, and as a result its one of the best silver 1s out there! your front bumpers sounds like its been a right headache to sort out, but you know it'll be worth it in the end!

Mouse, really feel for you mate :( But like Tim said, dont give up buddy! It will be worth it in the end! My body work aint mint and i'm just gonna save up a good 1.5-2 grand to get the last of the bodywork done and get a full respray and any imperfections taken out cos i'm not overly please with some of my work. The rear bumper is s**t and i'v got a paint run on my rear quarter, my front wing aint great, my bonnet has pitting on it! And it really upsets me considerin the stpid amount iv spent on her, but i will get her perfect! :)And you have to do the same!

I just got short patience when working on things plus I'm really picky so that doesn't make for a good combo. The gaps are so bad though. I think it is because of that stupid backbox that hit my car. I'll see if I can make it better but I doubt it :(

Yeh my front bumper keeps coming slightly loose and the gap opens up again. But it sounds like your matter is a bit worse than mines :?

Dont worry about it bud, it doesnt have to be perfect for the show. Just remember your goin down for the banter aswell! :D
