1.4 tdi and 1.4

ok im looking to buy the mark 6 polo no older than 2004 and i will be driving it to uni about 4 times a week so i will be travelling about 280 miles a week so i thought buying the 1.4 diesel would be better but it it is really hard to find 1 for the right price so what i want to know will i be saving a lot more money if i buy the 1.4 diesel rather than the 1.4 petrol?

and has anyone got exact figures for the miles per gallon for the 1.4 and the 1.4 diesel

from experience i know you will get 40-50mpg in the 1.4tdi

i'm guessing you'll be driving about 70 miles to uni and back each day you travel and if you take it steady, you will easily see 50mpg and maybe even 60!

I'd go for the Diesel aswell. My 1.2 is crap on petrol

plus you get the turbo too

What about a 1.9 tdi ?

Insurance is cheap (grp 6)

you should be able to pick one up for about Â£5500 ?

Insurance might still be a lot even on a group 6...

It'd be close I reckon, but you'll probably lose less in depreciation on the diesel.

budget might play a factor here, as the petrols will be a lot cheaper to buy for the same age and condition.

also, fuel isn't as big a cost as you think towards the whole cost of a car, there's the cost of running it / taxing it / maintaining it / insuring it and so on. best to bear that in mind, and the cheaper cost of petrol too.

personally if I could afford the extra I'd go for the diesel, but if you're on a budget then you'll get a nicer petrol for the same cash.
