Could you please tell me if all the gti gearboxs are the same or do they change with the different engine codes?

I think its possible the gearbox is different. I have a gti on a 2000 W plate, not sure of the engine code, where would I find this? I recently had it serviced (not at VW) and asked for the gearbox oil to be changed due to the gearboxes being weak on these. When he told me the oil was quite expensive, I replied with "I know and I believe it takes nearly 3 litres" (cos many people have said so on this forum), he said it only takes 1.8 litres? This worried me slightly but he has lots of software to look things up like that and is usually very knowledgable, it seems to run fine? Maybe it is a different gearbox?
Well having filled mine, it was definitely 2.7 litres exactly - me and my brother did mine. To find the engine code, its sometimes in the Manuals which come with the car, or if you take the big plastic cover off the engine the code is either printed or marked somewhere beneath (I think it was printed on the cam cover if i remember right).
To remove the cover - remove the 4 Allen Bolts you can see in front over the engine block (red), then you need to Pull the Rubber Tube off the top left of the Cover. You should be able to just tilt the cover then to see underneath. Alternatively if you want to remove it completely disconnect the pipe running into it bottom left.
Reverse this (as the Haynes Guide would say) to put it all back together.

All mk5 petrol polo's have exactly the same gearbox. The only differance is the gear ratio's. Also some of the boxes are cable change others are rod operated. The only differance here is that the cable change box has an additional part attached to it.
There are two differant gearbox codes used on the gti, the ETB and the FFW. Although i cannot find any difference in ratio's on either box and it would appear they are exactly the same. Whether the engine code is AVY or ARC is completely irrelivant to which gearbox is used.
I cant remember the exact capacity of the gearbox but from memory it was 2.7 litres. You cant physically overfill the box anyway, so if you buy 3 litres you'll be covered. Make sure you use a high quality 75/90 synthetic oil. I would also use 50ml of slick50 to help it last.

so can the cable change part be taken off if the new box is rod change and visversa?vdubit wrote:All mk5 petrol polo's have exactly the same gearbox. The only differance is the gear ratio's.
