Declaring Mods

Post by tegwin »

Just a passing thought really...

How many of you declare the mods on your cars (Thats a rhetorical question!)...

I was just wondering, if you do the G60 brake upgrade, should you declare it? If you change your headlight bulbs for brighter ones should you declare that?

What is declared as a MOD?...and will something as silly as the stuff mentioned above effect my insurance if I did them?

I believe they will, the brakes for sure cos they're more like a performance and handling upgrade from the original spec.

As far as the brakes are concerned, yes you should tell them.

I wouldn't worry so much with brighter bulbs.

The brakes may put the price up a tad, but that all depends on your insurance company.

surely if you have better brakes it'll stop quicker therefore be safer and cheaper to insure? I wondered this about tints and de-locking door handles too?

Last time I spoke to Brentacre I told them I had swapped my black 'VW' badges back to standard and he said that as they were simple OEM genuine parts it wasn't really an issue.

However things like wheels, brakes, exhausts, suspension and air filter need to be declared. All changes on my car are declared and Brentacre charge no extra for any modifications made during the duration of the policy (excluding performance parts that raise power output).

Bulbs, TT pedals, different brake pads, no need to declare. Its a bit like declaring that you've changed your tyres to a different make from the original rubber IMHO. No need.

Brakes though, definitely declare them :)

Cheers

Brentacre will not charge any extra for cosmetic modifications as long as you declare them! they even class exhaust and air filters as cosmetic :?

engine mods will hike the price though!

Would I get away with a modified 16v bumper then cos its an OEM part? Only kept the middle vent.

You may think performance brakes= to quicker braking so therefore insurance should be cheaper. This certainly isn't the case. Insurers see it in a different way. They say theres no need for better braking unless your likely to be driving it harder and faster so therefore insurance will be higher.

With tints it kainda evens out or slightly sways depending on which insurer. They hide contents of your car (Security) BUT they make your car look better and pass less light. (lower visiblity and more prone for thieves to look into). don't know about de-locks but they must be similar to what I mentioned.

Anyone fill in if i'm talking crap :)

Any change to the OEM Car is deemed to be a mod, Regardless of how petty it seems, Its good and bad in some cases, as mentioned if you change your oil and get better performance out the car, can that be deemed a change,

Also as i have had a discussion with a fellow friend and my mechanic who makes exhausts. If you modify your exhaust your deemed to be making a mod, ie making it breath better and in turn increasing the performance. But yet all the major Petrol Garages carry a line of fuel desinged to do this. So there for this is a mod. thats how i got round declaring my exhaust and getting charged nothing for it!

Its really stupid and arcahic the insurance companies !
