Speaker Question + Emissions Light Question.

Hi there,

I've a 2001 Polo, only had it for a couple of weeks, (I think I'm posting this in the right section...) and 2 quick questions for you about it.

1) The emissions light has decided to come on, and stay on. The lambda sensor was changed just before I bought the car, so ruling that out, what could be the cause of this? Can I fix it myself? Is it going to damage the engine if I dont get it fixed till the weekend?

2) The passenger side speaker has had it......well, actually saying that the only speaker that is working is the drivers side door speaker. I don't actually know how many speakers are in a Polo, so I guess there could be more than just the passenger side door one not working. So...
a) Is there just the two door speakers in a Polo?
b) What size of speakers does the Polo take (I'll just replace the lot)
c) Do aftermarket speakers need any adaptors to fit?

How many doors does your car have?

In terms of the GTi for a 5 door you 6.5" components in each door

On 3 doors you get 6.5" components in the front, and 6.5" coxials in the back.

I'm not sure if you get coxials or components in the front in the lower models? Regardless they'll still be the same size, and i would strongly recommened upgrading to 6.5" components anyway.

As for the Emissions light - You will need to hook your car up to a laptop for diagnostics. You can go to a VW garrage and get this done for about Â£40 but its rediculous!

Alot of the guys (including myself) have the gear to do diagnostics.

Where abouts in the UK are you?

Was looking on Ebay at VAG-COM chinese knock-off things that you can plug in and read/clear/etc codes with, are they worth getting, or would it be cheaper just buying an old laptop and the other bits of kit for the job? I assume the laptop doesnt exaclty need to be high-spec, as long as it has a USB port?

Aside from the laptop, can you link me to somewhere that sells the cables and software for the job? Also where do I find the wee connector in the car itself?

Its just a 1.4 S, 3 Door. Have heard coming from the back, so I assume that there is no speakers there. Cant see any either. So, I'm just looking at getting a pair of 6.5" components yeah?

What about adaptor mounts, are they needed or will 6.5's just go straight in? Also, to get them in, I assume the door card just wants taken off? Saw a guide somewhere here for that, looks like an easy morning job.

I got my VAG-COM cable from ebay. its just a USB cable. No you dont need a high spec laptop to run VAG-COM its not very processor intensive but its poorly written and crashes alot

Would anyone also happen to know (in PSI) the correct tyre pressure for the car? Its on the bog-standard factory 14" steelies.

My cable cost me about Â£15 at the time, it came with a cd that had a copy of vag-com.
Its an unregistered version, so you can check fault codes and clear them but you can't do stuff like throttle body alignement. You need to register it for things like that. which costs.
I have heard theres a crack but you must not touch stuff like that.

@Le_Petit_Lapin: your psi levels should be on the inside of your fuel filler cap. i put 32/33 psi in my 15"s depending on the conditions

tyre pressures inside fuel cap flap... could do with my car having a vag-com... anyone near wigan fancy a look???
