Not the news I wanted

Post by tegwin »

Took the GTI into the main dealer thismorning complaning of a heavy clutch, difficulty selecting gears etc...

They checked the peddlebox and its fine, they replaced the clutch cable which has made the clutch a tiny bit lighter...

but they suspect there is a fault either with the clutch, or gearbox and want more money to investigate :x

Not a happy bunny now!

not sure if I should replace the clutch and release bearing, or just throw the towel in and get the gearbox rebuilt as well at great expense..

Oh, its a 52,000 miles, still on the origional box and clutch.

Ha don't pay them any more money to "investigate"...thats s**t!

Its up to you at the end of the day, but if you're getting the typical symptons of the 'box on it's way out, then don't mess about...go and get it sorted asap!

Yeah..planning to go and have a chat with a couple of gearbox specialists next week, get them to have a drive etc and quote for a rebuild...

Would mean walking to work for a week or so

How much should I epect to pay for a rebuild?

Rebuild is about 600/700+ depending on the place without the clutch. DO NOT get them to recondition a clutch,as they would charge about 100-150 pounds, when you can buy one new for that amount. Mine came with a reconditioned clutch and that had to be replaced after 6 months.

My clutch is very heavy, a few people who have driven my car have also noticed it. I have had a couple of occasions where selecting a gear has been a problem.

Youve got me worried now :(

wow its sounding like my problem. since my engine rebuild i noticed the gearing was different. recently i been having problems changing gear as in i couldnt get it in gear it was only grinding the gears when i push the clutch down...... luckily it stopped working at my house tho......... but as it happens the peal box is f***3d. mainly the part of the box that holds the clutch pedal came away from the rest so it meant my clutch was totally useless thus my car was a sitting duck. now im getting it replaced.

£600 - £700 +, where you get that figure from? I payed £425 cash for my rebuild and comes with 12 months guarantee. Also I payed £40 in total to get box out and in, but that was on the side because I know a bloke who is a VW mechanic. Id dread to think how much VW would charge!!

I ended up paying a grand total of £900 when my Box went in my old GTi.

£500 for the rebuild. Then £400 labour inc new clutch, installing it, and taking box in and out etc.

I could have cried...or sold it...so i sold it! lol

I have no issues with doing all the labour intensive bits myself, I can easily pop the box out, replace the clutch and stick it all back together again in an afternoon, but trying to rebuild the box myself, however tempting it might be, is possibly just too risky...One spacer in the wrong place and I could end up with 5 reverse gears :p

I bought the car with the gearbox having been rebuilt a few months prior to me buying it, the gearbox rebuild was 700 I think + 200 for the clutch to be reconditioned. So much for that, as I had to put a new clutch in again last month.

i get this, heavy crunchy clutch, difficult gears, but only after i've driven it alot, ie, 100 miles in a day or so, or after long traffic jams.

This related at all? Or something different altogether?

i'm at 42k original gearbox and clutch

Mine does get worse after long trips...

Presumably because something is getting hot and expanding....

thats exactly what my does too. this week when its been cold my gear box is sweet as a nut and its totally smooth for about 15 mins. then once its been "used" it goes back to its ordinary clonky crunchy self. 4th i really hard to drop into from 5th.

I had exactly the same, peddle box ok, VW stealer jumped straight on the gearbox & wanted £120 to change the gearbox oil.

I've just had my clutch & cable replaced, the clutch feels a bit heavy but they is no more crunching of the gears. i.e. first to second & no difficultly going from fifth down into fourth.

Get the clutch change first I say before pulling the box to bits.
