Norwitch Union Direct, there only competitive if you've got pass plus. I'm paying £500-ish on my own and I'm 18.

Take a day or two off for the purpose of it, gather a list of all the companies you can find (including all the wierd, little ones), and call them up. Call round a second time to play them off each other and see if you can weedle a lower price and/or better cover as an incentive for you to give them several hundred of your or your parents' hard-earned for what is really a 100-to-1 payout risk or less. Worked alright for me - though i didn't go at it quite as hard as all that. Basically ended up taking the best 3 quotes (Direct Line, Endsleigh, Norwich Union) and seeing if they could out compete the other two in terms of cover and premium. Managed to pretty much half my original quote (over 1000, down to 540). Same again this year - in the mid 400s now, think im still with endsleigh... not sure tho :)

Doesn't hurt to be female and living in a low risk area though. I have a girl mate* from uni, a year my junior, driving a whacking great Volvo 740 2.5 litre auto estate (2 years newer, too), fully comp... FOR LESS PREMIUM. Damn! All because of gender and me living in the city.

*not girlfriend
