Flywheel or Gearbox??

car rattles from gearbox, but when i press the clutch pedal down it goes away. have had a couple of garages look at it without opening the box up as i'm short of the cash required to replace gearbox if it is that. anyway the VAG specialist thinks it's the gearbox and a gearbox specialist thinks it's the dual mass flywheel. now the question is has anyone on here had a similar problem if so what are the signs of either????

if it goes away with the clutch pressed down isn't that a thrust bearing in the gearbox or something?

thats what i thought, but was told it's not the thrust bearing. problem is if i get them to strip the box out to replace the flywheel and clutch, and it turns out to be the box i'm stuffed as i don't Â£900 for new box and can't get hold of a used one with the risk of what that box will be like once on the car. it's a pig of a situation to be in what with xmas on the way.

KO, once again, do what I suggested and ask these questions in the general or "freedom" section, ie "ask a tech" in www.briskoda.net - most of what can happen has already happened to Fabias - and especially the PDi ones. Maybe just using the search function first will assist you in getting the correct answer.

Can't you just get your current box rebuilt. Surely that would be a much cheaper option than shelling out Â£900 on a another one?! Probably best to replace the clutch and flywheel regardless anyway as its normally big labour costs for gearbox off jobs.

Though have you had your gearbox mount checked? I remember someone posting ages back that there was an issue with the gearbox mounts on some of 9N's

My car makes this noise too and its due to a worn thrust bearing but its been checked n its not worn to excess caused by previous owner not using the handbrke enough and trying to clutch control

i could get the current box rebuilt but it would only come with a one year or 12,000 miles warranty, but if i buy from VW dealer i would get a Two year warranty instead.

Hi claire,

are there any other symptoms apart the rattle on your car. when i start my car first thing in the morning the starter motor spins a little after the car has started and also the gears feel a bit sticky and there is a little vibration from the clutch pedal when i rest my foot on it gently..pressed down a couple of mm and the vibration comes through the pedal not sure if this is normal on all diesels. i would love to think it's the flywheel and clutch rather than the gearbox...

i would be suprised if your gearbox was bust with that mileage, i still think thrust bearing is most likely but thats still a box off job

was thinking of replacing the flywheel as well as i have heard that they go so might as well replace that otherwise the box has to come off for that again, what are your thoughts?

Yes, you need to register - but that is easy when there is a chance of getting some good info, as I said I've not got a Skoda as such - both of us have a rebadged Fabia thought! Getting your gearbox rebuilt, depending on mileage and understanding of all the box's current problems mean that I would think that it is easier to get a recon VW box - if indeed your gearbox really needs extensive repairing. One further point, it sounds a bit like DMF trouble as you are getting problems with the starter as well. I hope that you know the price of a DMF + labour. On the subject of gearbox mountings, I think that it is only the Fabia VRS and Ibiza Cupra - ie with the "top" power TDi that has a problem with the mounting under the battery box, there is a revised mounting I think, but slobbering it with silicon gear (from dealer) might quieten it for a while.

thanks have booked car in for a flywheel and new clutch along with the release bearing. i will update end of next week as to the outcome.
