K & N Replacement Filter Query

I've recently made an equiry to a certain company about purchasing a replacement filter for my Polo, and they've replied asking for the original part number and dimensions, so that they can cross-reference it or something.

Does anyone know these details offhand or at least the location of the filter in the engine bay, so I can rip her out for a looksy (it's embarressing opening a bonnet, not knowing where the thing you're looking for actually is!

)

Can't help you with part no. or dims now, bit late to go and check....
But to get to it, pull engine cover off, give it a good old tug, then I think theres a few screws underneath, un do them and the filter is in there.

If you do change the filter make sure it's a panel filter, don't go for the cone variety. The standard airbox on VW's are more than adequate and in some cases are more efficient than a cone. I'm sure the filter is top right.

Why do you want to change the filter anyway?

I'm considering changing it as I've been informed that it helps to iron out 'flat spots' in the rev band and also gives the engine an ever so slightly deeper note (getting fed up with the whine, now).

But the problem is that I've been told I could well lose my warranty if I even go anywhere near the blummin' thing.

Warranty. That's the reason why I leave my car alone. VW can get very picky even if you fit after market audio equipment. They just love to shove the blame on someone else. To be honest I don't think the filter will make much difference anyway some people kid themselves into thinking it makes a difference when in reality it's making matters worse.

What do you mean you're fed up with the whine, you've only had the car for two weeks and the engine's not even run in. Give it time.

It's up to you but if you want to spend money upgrading your car, that money could be used as a deposit for a more powerful Polo or Golf that doesn't need tuning.

Saying I'm fed up with the engine sound is extreme and gives the wrong impression, I retract that statement.

I like the raw edge to it, just would be nice to get rid of the aforementioned whine in 1st gear.

Unfortunately, buying a more powerful model is not an option, when at 17 years old, insurance is already high enough on a car with only 55bhp!

I expect I'll probably end up leaving the engine alone, and just worry about asthetics and gizmos (that's all the birds care about, really

). The plan is to keep the car until I'm about 21/22ish and then dive in the deep end and buy my dream car straight off - an Evo 6/7/8 (undecided). Hey, can't a lad dream??

ok i run a K&N on my mk5 and it does give the engine a much deeper note as for power thats debateable but it does allow the engine to build revs faster when its not under load but i felt that torque was up
i have my filter basically sat on the engine which is very bad because of the hot air so soon i should be fabbing a full on induction kit but i cannot refit the original air box as on a mk5 the place where a strut brace runs is straight throiugh where the air box lives

on a warrenty note i fitted my K&N at around 3000 miles after purchase and a further 1000 miles down the road i killed 2 spark pluge (unrelated) K&N tried to blame the k&n until i stated the fact that replacing an item such as a filter cannot void your warrenty unless the car manufacturer supplies and fits the item which you are replacing free of charge. this means that if you want vw to change your air filter at the recomended interval and they charge you then a K&N will NOT legaly void your warrenty. i fought and won so it shows that dealers can be wrong in a very grey area

ps to avoid killing more plugs i have since fitted ngk platinums and althoough they set you back a LOT (bout Â£80 at tiome of purchase as mine was one of the gunnea pigs) they havent dies yet in 10 .000 miles

You jammy beggar mole! We might well be getting an Evo 8 once the old man gets fed up of the R32, so maybe I'll try and grab that at a reduced cost!

Actually, my dream car would have to be an Evo that sounds like a Scooby! There's some guy at college that thunders past in a new STi PPP everyday with a truly mammoth tailpipe on the thing. Scares the crap out of me every time too!

exactly cos if you wanna cam an impretza you will need 4 (four) cams cos you need 2 per bank and the only other engine like that (needing 4) is a dohc v configuration
