I've been to 'Dam 5 times, 3 times with my wife I think. I once spent xmas there which was interesting.
Tim there are some very good historical/interesting places to visit as well as the obvious red light district e.g anne frank house, van gogh musuem, heienken museum tour, canal tour, flower market, sex museum and some great parks. The shopping isn't bad either, there is pretty much everything you want/need from a city, it has such a great feel about the place.
Can't say I've ever felt vulnerable, neither has my wife, even walking through the seedier districts.
