Handbrake adjustment

Post by gti-joe »

Anybody know how to adjust the handbrake to make it hold after one or to clicks. My one is a bit sloppy at the moment and needs five or six clicks to hold on steep gradients.

I think..........

Tug the plastic trim around the handbrake - it is held on with 4 clips - it will reveal the cable and near the back of where the trim was sitting you should see the adjusting bracket with a nut on it. Tighten up that to desired position then replace trim. Job done.

This is what I think to be true, probably wrong and by doing this will probably damage your vehicle, knacker the whole braking system and start World War 3. Follow these instructions at your own risk.

...Sorry, when I say the trim around the handbrake I mean the floor part not the actual trim encasing the handbrake itself

Polo 9N Centre Console Removal:
Tools needed:
Torx head screw driver no T25

Image

The first step is to remove the 2 screws located under the radio area with a torx head screw driver.

Image

The second step is to gently unclip the surround of the gear leaver.

Image
Do this gently the length on the console. It should then be free and lift out.

Image

This will also expose the Hand Brake Adjustment.

Great guide Oz - where did you get the exploded diagramme from? Not sure (more than likely wrong!) you need to remove the whole assembly. Part number 4 does comes away separately to the rest of it without having to romove the trim around the gear stick. I found if you lift part 4 at the cup holder end it will free itself then the only other way it is secured is on the other end by two lugs which kind of hinge the part upwards.

ELSA Workschop manual

As above, only need to pull part 4 off to adjust the handbrake.

Job done guys, just as per info provided, thanks again.

Maybe mods could move the above info to the HOW TO section.

One thing to check now is that the handbrake levers mounted on the callipers are still able to return to their stops. I think that this rotten set-up needs this to be so that the piston automatically takes up the pad wear. Anyone managed to add return springs to these callipers? Shortening the cable, if it has been fitted correctly at the factory, will only end up by using up some of the limited "movement" of the piston. Another thing to check inside the car is that the equaliser link - the bar that joins both sides beside the handbrake hand lever - is as shown in the picture - ie it is "straight" when the handbrake hand lever is down and same when it is up.
