Mk4 1.6 GLX - Opinions please

Post by SteveB »

Hey people, I'm after some help, do you think the following would be a good buy...?

Image

1996 N reg 1.6 GLX
67k, met green, MOT April, Tax end September, service history.
Has had new engine management system.
Originally advertisted at £2875 now £2700 might be able to get it for 2600.

Hasn't had the cam belt changed, should that be done at 60k or 80k on a 1.6?
Pulls to the left a bit, my dad reckons its just tracking (he's a mechanic), can be sorted. One rust patch under the sill near the corner of the drivers door, and a couple of smallish scratches.

Seems a nice car with all the extras.
Cheers Steve

Get the seller to sort the tracking before you buy it (so you can take it on a drive and be sure it no longer pulls).

Tracking costs like a tenner or something, so the seller should do this without any problem.

Thing is.... If it's not jus the tracking, it could mean something on it is bent!

Do an HPI check on it before buying too.

Apart from that, they're nice cars.

If you buy it, do the cam belt and tensioners asap and give it a good service (fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, oil, brake fluid, gearbox oil, plugs, alternator belt, cam belt and tensioners)... After all that, sort the rust out and give it a bloody good polish and wax.

You should have a minty Polo after all that!

yes I'd agree. looks like a good car but get him to sort out the tracking.

it shouldn't cost much at all & if the seller is reluctant to do it I'd be suspicious. it could be something like a bent wishbone from knocking a kerb, its easily done but not cheap to replace.

apart from that it sounds good. mileage is average & GLXs are pretty much like 16v spec only with an 8v engine (although it has more cc & more torque).

the fact the timing belt needs doing isn't really something to put you off buying but rather a good bargaining point. if you buy the car though get it done as soon as possible or you could SERIOUSLY regret it.

Price came down in the end :D so I picked her up this afternoon. Should be changing timing belt at the weekend. Then I'll start looking at the rest. I'll get some picies soon.
