HELP my POLO drinking 2 much PETROL

jus need some help, i have bought a new VW polo S reg 5 door 1.4 only done 62500 miles.

the car is drinkin so much petrol any idea on how i can fix it? plz plz help me im broke as it is livin on beans on toast

Firstly - you need to quantify your current mpg and the type of trips you are doing in it

Should be between 35 and 45 on a run depending on what speed you cruise at (stay around 65 and you'll see 45 plus go quicker and well it drops rapidly)

Round town don't expect the same figures (it's all stop start work)

They are a very heavy car for 60 bhp and this penalty is paid for at the pumps

They also are a torquey engine so don't respond well to being red lined everywhere - it's actually just as quick and far more economical to change up at 2,500 max thro the gears

All of the above is based on my experience and provided you haven't been driving with

- the handbrake on
- partially seized brakes
- under inflated tyres
- much wider wheels and tyres
- a "tat rack" fully loaded up on the roof
- 5 people in the car all the time

Thats not exactly the best way to measure mpg but on the face of it thats 16 (ish) mpg

Does it run OK?
Are you sure the tank isn't leaking or any of the fuel lines?

i mean it does drive really well, and its really quick...but i didnt notice any petrol leeking....apperently their is some petrol filter?// is this true and if it is do i need 2 change that....sorry im a newbie in cars

Petrol filter is behind the petrol tank between it and the rear axle - normally you'd notice it needs changing if performance is "bad" or it's leaking. It should be changed every service I think

If it's going really well and it's quick I assume you are using that performance although to be honest the 1.4 8V engine is an asmatic wheezy lump and I wouldn't ever say that it was quick but it really does depend on what you are used to!!!

Is the car std or has it been modified with filter kit and adjustable pressure regulator on the fuel feed

TBH it's very hard to diagnose this sort of problem on a forum

when are u changing gear? Block change and make sure your using 5th gear properly. Are you running any ICE?

Does having ICE in your car e.g. an amp and sub cause the car to drink more petrol??

i think mine is drinking too much aswell.

a full tank will last me around 250 miles so thats about 40 litres.

I have upped my wheels to 15" alloys and it is an automatic.

I do 70 miles a day of which most is motorway and i travel at 70 mph and a little more at times. I have tried driving at 60 and it doesnt really make too much difference.

being an automatic it is easy to redline because its like a go kart.

I was thinking of selling up and getting a newer polo but would like to see if this is normal or just my car because if its my car then ill get under to hood.

I cleaned out the air filter a couple of weeks ago but would putting a performance air filter change anything?

Glad, this is being discussed... as recently i have been noticing im going to the petrol station quiet a bit???

But i have the feeling my parents might be using the car now i have given them the spare key to move the car when its blocking the drive????

Anyway... what does ice do in relations to the petrol?? as i have to do something about the amp and all that s hit... just cant work out, what???

haha automatics drink petrol like theres no tommorow, I drove my mums while mine was in repair, theyre well thirsty. A big ICE build will obviously add more weight to the car, particularly if your using heavy MDF, which will of course increase your petrol consumption; as to the amount of petrol it drinks from being used ive no idea but id imagine it would use more, especially if youve got a powerful amp and sub. Polos are supposed to do about 40 - 45 miles to the gallon, thats not great but considering its such a solidly built car its ok, if you think in comparison a Corsa does about 50.

hi guys thanks for many reply. tbh i dont tink my car has been anyway modified, but it did catch me...would the exchaust pipe be the problem cos i had a look underneath and it looks messed up like some sort of diesies or somtin, i didnt see any holes but could that be the problem??

it could be anyting first of all tray to change the lambda sensor and the temp sensor they are the main things you have to check if the cars runnin rich.

Bought my 1.3 1995 polo in october. Done a couple of trips to Barrow-in-furness from manchester.
I once got out of a full tank + £10 500 miles (went to barrow in this duration).
But at crimbo (going to barrow) gave it a full tank and i only got 300 miles.

Now i thought i got ripped off on a 1 shot of Redex so i added what was in the container and went and bought another and added hat one.
Turned out the 1st shot was enough so i basically put to much redex in.
Could this have been my problem why i lost 200 miles ?

To be fair mate, every single one of those 'performance enhancers' actually decrease performance and probably effect your mpg a fair bit. There was a big test in lab conditions in Fifth Gear (its good for some things i guess......) and every single performance additive decreased performance by about 5%. So i wouldnt bother adding it in future if it was me. run a few tanks worth of petrol through and see how she fairs after that!
