Post by DanW »

I'm just wondering if anyone gets a noise like wooshing air in the motor if you really push it in first?

I get a high sort of screaming sound at the top end of my revs. I have a rev counter and it happens at about 5K. This is simply the noise from the cam belt.

I'm sure that your noise is probably something like this, or air rushing in the air intake?

I have a 1.0l with a four speed box and I'm in 3rd at 30 normally and you are still in first! I think I need to give my car a little more grief

it could be the gearbox if they use straight cut gears on first (I cant remember if they do or not). Anyway the rest of the gears apart from reverse will be helixial cut which operate quieter than straight cut gears

Jeez logik, yeah, you need to hammer it a bit more... I shift to 4th between 29 and 35 when really cruising, but 2-3rd at 30 is more common for keeping a fair pace. 1st - 2nd at around 25 (2-3 at a smidge over 45) when hammering it (not worth the extra half second for the sake of knackering the engine going much higher). Limitered redline is pretty much 30mph on the button (~53 in 2nd) for me, but by then it seems to go a bit more urgently in 2nd (..3rd). Power really drops off at the top for the 1-litre and 55hp 1.3... They have nice pull from even below 2000, but go best from the low-mid 3000s to mid-upper 5000s (well... thats the result of a lot of ardent guesswork, thrashing, and patching together of sums).

And yep, I get that whooshing noise too, but only since I had the cambelt changed. Not sure whether it's because the garage messed it up somehow, or the old one was slack. Fairly quiet at low revs, gets more noticable as you push it, and sounds a bit like a turbo (well, turbo diesel) when reaching for 5-6 thousand. Fweeee...
Also has a funny "fizzing"/buzzing type noise in the higher reaches, just as you're hitting the power peak. Or groaning (sure as hell isn't a "roar" or "scream"). Hard to describe without getting the mic out and putting an mp3 up on the board. Makes you feel a little remorseful about how hard you're whipping the car, until you realise you're at best acceleration and still about to be overtaken by a bus :)
(rob and dan, you two are sick monkeys :D)

Also yes - It's got that oldskool straight-cut cog whining noise on first and reverse too (and at 25-35 in all gears), to remind you that you're using a seventies vintage gearbox!

lol I don't know weather it's my car, but it doesn't seem to loose too much power when I'm doing 25-27mph in first. I'm about to change the air filter I think. Because the old one is boring, just been in my m8's corsa, it sounds well beafy even without the zaust done (the old one wouldnt fit through the back bumper so he's getting a custom job aparently).

have you decat it yet or done *anything* to the exhaust/intake? that might be the thing :) for such a small engine it's got a lot of chokers on it
25-27, mines not so bad either, but as by then 2nd is into the power band i dont wanna knacker the engine for the sake of saving half a second on a trip that may be 10 minutes to 3 hours... :) not made of money you know!
(I dont often take it past 70 in 3rd either because by then the diff between 3rd and 4th is too close to call. Unless i've got a sandwich in the left hand or am feeling lairy :D)

PS I edited that post about eighteen times so you may wanna reload and reread hehe :p
