Well, took the front pads out today and sure enough down to the wear indicators. Popped to GSF and got the pagid ones and put them in this afternoon. So thats the fronts and the Warning light sorted.

Also my rear discs and pads turned up this afternoon so I need to decide whether to go to the MOT as is and see if they pass with the rustyness (& risk having to pay a retest fee!) or fit them prior which could be unnecessary!

Joy!

Well you will need to fit the new brakes [to the rear] at some point. How long will you store them for before you put them on? I'd say stick 'em on now, for peace of mind and also free up space in the home ;) You didn't buy these new brakes to admire them [in the box!] :)

Some people are saying replace them and some say its normal for the outer disc to corrode as the pad never touches it which i'm sure is correct, so are the garage simply 'on the make'?
The pad is designed to contact all of the disc surface area, the front brakes do most of the braking so the rears don't work as hard, hence over time the corrosion, possibly why vw has went back to drums on the mk7,less maintenance and just as efficient, unless you intend to race.

What we all tend to forget is that brakes and tyres tend to be neglected in favour of a new air filter box, £100 or insurance claim, I know where my money goes! Its better not to get personal with the car in front

Remember to release the bleed nipple when pushing the piston in on the front and winding the rear back in, prevents contaminated fluid entering the abs pump and potentially causing problems.

Decided to fit them in the end. Was actually quite easy, especially the second one when I new exactly what I was doing.

Although the pads still had a lot of life left in them, the discs were pretty knackered, even more so on the insides.

Just need to rack up a few miles to bed them the new ones in! Will be interesting to see if the pads make full contact with the entire disc (which they should it appears) or wear like the old ones did.

I've just had a look at the rear discs on my wife's 1.4SE with 48,000 and 5.5 years old - they are wearing the disc to the full width of the pads. I think that you will find that the wear indicators are fitted to one side of the car nowadays, in my experience VW fit Pagid and Textar pads and never ATE - but that does not mean that ATE for rubbish. In fact this Polo has Pagid front and Textar rear. What price were your Pagid front pads at GSF?

Interestingly the rears did not have an electronic wear indicator on them after all. The Pagids were £26.50 + VAT from GSF. VW ones were £50 from the dealer! Pedal is feeling quite a bit more responsive already and I've not really bedded them in yet.
