Engine 25bhp short of power

Post by andyg »

As some of you may know I had problems with my engine being 25bhp low on power. Over the past year or two it has cost me an absolute fortune to find the cause of the problem.

Turns out the VVT actuator was not being activated for some reason. To rectify the problem the garage shorted the acutator making it be constantly on.

While this gives me the power the car should have from 3000 rpm+, at lower revs the car is a little jerky. I want to run a wire from the actuator into the cabin so that I can switch the actuator on and off when I feel like it.

Where abouts can I feed a wire through into the cabin? Photos would be appreciated.

Thanks

sorry to hijack your thread but where abouts is the vvt actuator a pic would be good. also you can feed the wire through a gromet in the passenger side of the bulk head as that is where i rang the feed for my amp from the battery but i would like to find this actuator as mine is doing the same thing as yours.

Am I missing something....

I was under the impression that the 6n2 1.6 16V engine did not have variable valve timing!

mk5coz: No probs, is the gromit near the pollen filter? I'll try get you a pic, but the VVT actuator is situated to the left of the number 1 HT lead, its between the HT lead and the timming belt. Once you take the plastic engine cover off you will see it straight away.

tegwin: Yep the GTi has VVT, if you listen carefully when you accellerate you'll hear the engine note change. The VVT is activated by the ECU, it turns on the solenoid (VVT acuator) this then lets oil pressure advance the cams. It gives the polo good performance while still keeping the car economical at lower revs. BTW: where was that photo taken in your sig?

It kicks in around 3250 rpm and is fully open at 4750 rpm (or there abouts). On my car its fully open all the time, this makes the car bunnyhop a little when cold at lower revs, but its worth it because when the VVT is off altogether the car drives like sh1t.

Is it too costly to replace the actuator ?

If its just a standard (Ish) solonoid, then it shouldnt be to expesnive...

But no reason why you cant take it out and test it...as well as testing the feed to it...
