gearbox oil change/re-fil HELP!!!!!!
so ive been doing an oil service on the car today. engine oil done, just drained the gearbox oil thinking that the top up spout was the bit on the very top of the box with the plastic cap, but when you put oil in there it just pours out again from somewhere else underneath AAAAAAARRRRRHHHH!!!!!!! can anyone who has done this please explain where i fill it up again? pics? PLEASE HELP 
There are two sump plugs on the gearbox...the one closest to the front is slightly higher...this is used to fill the gearbox...
The one closer to the back is used to drain the box...
Both require a 17mm hexagonal tool to remove them...
Um.....If you have been pouring gearbox oil into the hole I think you mean, then you have just poured gearbox oil all over your clutch and flywheel....
If you put oil in this hole, it will pour straight back out of the vent hole underneath the engine between the engine block and gearbox...
You will be needing a new clutch and a bloody good degreace of your flywheel...

doh, yeh i poured 100ml in the whole on the top before i saw it coming out at the bottom! this looked the same as the filler hole on the gearbox of the mk3 golf gti i had before. guess it might have been better to ask first then! its the hard way for me though, every time!!
also what is the big black nut at the bottom end of the box closest to the engine for? it has a sprung loaded bit attached to it containing a ball bearing?

OOPs indeeed..
Dont even try and drive the car with a lubed up clutch...it will slip like a b***h and damage the flywheel...might also cause the clutch disk to fracture...
The big black bolt with ball bearing....Im fairly sure its a pretensioner for the internals of the box...
Put it back in lol...and make sure you put that ball bearing back as well!

In all honesty, I havnt managed to screw up that badly
I find its best to ask for advice and think things through before going at it with a hammer...
(Having said that, I did watch a friend use a hammer to persuade some pistons to go into their barrels....thus snapping all of the piston rings and scratching the bores..)
actually now i think of it, i did hospitalise myself last year whilst working on my mk2 golf 16v. i was trimming the g60 arches to fit (it was a small bumper car) with a stanley knife of course. when i came to the end of the cut there was so much pressure behind the blade and my leg was the closest thing to the work bench. 2 inches long and 1 inch deep it was, didnt bleed until i started walking though?!
always cut AWAY from yourself like your dad/teachers tought you
oh and theres the time i did some 'minor' body/paint work on my mk 3 golf gti which resulted in a £1300 re-spray, but that is just too painfull to go in to (more so than the stanley knife incident)
do you think my cars are trying to tell me something? hhhmmmmmmm
still could be worse though, somehow..................

A long time ago I worked in a mechanics garage, changed the oil for the gearbox and the engine, and forgot to remove the container which had about 15 litres of oil when I lowered the ramps. The result was 3 gallons of oil spilling all over the place
