Having a little trouble + ESP

Post by S.P'z GTI »

well started my gti today and as soon as the car started it cut out.
so i turned the key again and it cut out again, so i gave it some gas when i turned the key again and it started but was running lumply.

so i turned it off and when to the engine bay as disconnect each spark plug lead and connected it back then started the car and it ran ok, untill i got half way down the road then the ESP LIGHT came on and it was like all the power from the engine went.

it was like there was a restriction.

what does this ESP LIGHT MEAN!!!

and y do u lot think my car was cutting out when first starting it.

i was reading past post about throttle body resetting and was woundering how this is done.

any suggestion will be thankful

When it loses power like that I believe it is in "limp mode" to protect the engine!

Could be limp mode, the engine will turn off the VVT in that case, so it will run slower.

Get it hooked up to diagnostic, could be one of your sensors causing probs.

i had that before after i had disconected the battery and ht leads when servicing. to resolve it, i disconnected the wired plug that goes into base of the throttle body, left it for a few minutes then plugged it back in, started the car and went for a steady drive (motorway type criusing is best, avoid stop/start/heavy revving). and that seemed to re-set it. also it reduced the kangaroo effect when pulling away in 1st (could also try cleaning the throttle body for this). the esp light should remain on when you turn the ignition after all the others have gone out (well plus the handbrake light if its on) then go out when you start the engine.

thanks, i think it must of went into limp mode.

but now my engine management light is no now!

is there a way that u can get the error code?

when i had my punto gt there was a BLINK TEST that could be done and would let u know the error code on the ecu by using the diagnostic port.

is there any think like this on the polo that could be done or do u have to hook it up to a diagnostic?

in that case best take it to a stealership and have them plug it in to vag-com and check for error codes. :(

sorry dont know what a blink test is. think the only way to recover the error codes is through vag com.

when i had an audi a4 i think there was a way to show certain codes and values through the climate control display. not sure if it was for error codes stored on the ecu though or if a simular thing can be done on the polo!?

i would ask the dealer to check for stored error codes to be on the safe side.
