If I could be re-assured enough that it will last 3 years+...then that alone would be enough for me fork out 1k on this...

Quote from Andy on Club Polo
The GTI 'boxes are pretty much identical to the earlier Polo ones, with the exception of a cable change linkage (if memory serves) and larger diff pinion gears on some of them. Whether it's the different diff arrangement that causes some of the issues I don't know - VW obviously thought there was a weakness there that needed addressing.

Personally I'd start by running a poll amongst 6N/6N2 owners to see what bits of their 'boxes have been breaking, and then evaluate the results. What oil have they run in the 'box? Has it ever been off the car (i.e. could it've lost some oil, or incurred other damage?). What kind of driving do they do? What power/torque is their car? What suspension height are they running? What wheels are they using? Have they ever crashed the car?

5th gear failure is fairly common on higher powered G40s - but is also caused by running low on gearbox oil, and not unheard of on any Polo with an 085-series 'box. If you've had a 5th gear set die and the 'box doesn't have the correct fill of oil in it, don't blame the gearbox design. I very much doubt there are more than a couple of Polo GTIs putting out enough torque to damage 5th gear like the G40s do, so wouldn't worry too much there.

BTW - the diff bearings most definately aren't plastic on the older 085 'boxes, and I'll bet that they aren't on the newer ones either. It's great that there's someone out there willing to help. But first clearly identify the problem, then fix it. Otherwise you're just pissing in the wind.
I think if we could pull as much info together as possible it might make things easier - like expanding on the gearbox sticky thread we already have

Hi, my gearbox went at 50000 miles. The pinion bearing went causing it to whine constantly.

Went in the garage last week for it's six month inspection for the warranty. Sweet as a nut. The guy who did my car said make sure you keep changing the oil every two years with good oil, and it should last. Especially if you have had a gearbox re-built properly, not by a pikey!!

Im going to stick with changing the oil every year and see what happens.

I think mine went because the bearings just not man enough anyway and when the oil breaks down the bearings wear quickly then fail.

I have my theory what do you guys think.

Failure always points back to the weakest component, so in theory if your replace it with something strong it should be relatively failure free and at least have an average expected life cycle.

still on the cars first box and not had any issues with it other than needing to adjust the clutch as bite point was low causing crunching. changed the box oil last week though guessing it had never been done. it was really filthy and bitty so i will definitly be doing it at least every 10,000 miles or maybe just when i change engine oil (around 5,000 miles) is simple to do (once you know how ) and the oil you need will only cost about £15 from vw. strongly recommended if you want to prolong the life of the box. incidently there was only just over 2 litres that came out of the box but its 2.7 litres to fill it up !? so worth checking!

my original plan was to change the gearbox oil every 10000miles. 1st time i changed it at 50000 looked like it was the 1st time it had ever been done and was a little bit gritty. changed it just the other week at 60000 and looked almost brand new! think il change it every 20000 instead!
