No not necessarily, a lot of people do a deal with the whole kit though (90% pipe and breather filter)
I fitted my breather filter using Ice Hockey tape, it's like sticky cloth and simply wrapped it around the pipe and breather, it's a really sturdy.
Most breathers come the same diameter as the pipe, so you may have to find a copper sleeve or something to fix it in place.
