hi all,
Was just driving along yesterday when there was an awful bang.
Car's suspension was very noisey and the handling was terrible.
Took it to my work workshop and raised the car to see what the problem was.
On the offside front suspension, the roller bearing top mount has completely failed, it was in pieces and the ball bearings went everywhere.
Why on earth would this fail like that?
Its a 2002 polo sport with 53,000 miles on the clock.
I have spoke to a VW dealership and they aren't aware of any problems.
what could have caused this because i have no idea why this part would fail like that.
thanx

Are you sure that its not a spring that has broken and allowed the top bearing to tip over. I know from bitter experience, that if the weight is taken off these top bearings, they will fall apart. You see, the top half of the bearing gets "stuck" to the top mounting due to it pressing on the rubber, so when the top or any other part of the spring breaks, the lower half of the bearing is allowed to drop down - so the balls fall out. Another thing is, when you strip this lot down for the first time, and shuffle off to your local VAG outlet, you will find out that one they sell you does not look exactly like what you have removed - the reason being is that the top rubber covering of this bearing will probably still be stuck to the lower face of the top mounting! It wasn't only me that was confused the day I went to get my new bits - a mechanic was in and he was questioning what he had been supplied - luckily for me I had worked that out already!
