Lowered polos mkvii look terrible

Post by solidsponge »

Just because a lot of cars look better lowered doesnt mean that automatically lowering them makes them look better. Many factors are involved including the way the car looks and the general shape.

The problem is the mkvii polo has a long over hanging front and very straight sides from top to bottom. Not to mention very large front headlight incasings. When the car is lowered the front overhang and lights look even larger, which in turn makes the wheels look smaller still. Has no one here noticed that all these lowered polos look squashed and the wheels look tiny?

Sure the older mk4s generally look far better but if you are lowering them to look better I dont think its fair to just be blind and think because its a modifcation its automatically better and looks great. If you open your eyes you should see that it actually looks really poor on this shape of car especially because of the front styling.

Not to mention the fact the car designer made this look sporty from the start and it looks just right at the default height. Its a real shame to see such a good looking car spoilt with ill thought out lowering modications with no one bothering to stop and think, actually does this look better?

It doesnt look better and sure it might just be an opinion, but its an opinion of a designer (me) and at least I know vaguely what Im talking about to some degree.

IF you are thinking of lowering your car take a serious look at the lowered ones on here and ask yourself are they better? Or do the wheels look tiny and the front looks out of proportion as well as looking squashed. Most other lowered cars do not look like this...

Im sure no one will take any notice! :)

Never mind...

The lower better imo
Just had this quote on another topic.

This proves my point because many people are not even bothering to look with their eyes at the car! You should take things into considering such as the shape of the car and the fact it makes the wheels and front on this particular model look out of proportion and less sporty if anything.

You cant just say the lower the better because that means the car might as well not have a design to start with. The polo has been made by a designer to look good. Just saying the lower the better means it doesnt matter what it looks like it looks better lowered? How does this physically make any design sense when the car has been designed otherwise?

Sure the mk4s and mk5s look better lowered but this model has a huge front and the sides are very straight, the headlights are huge and the overhang from the front is very large too.

Do yourself a favour and keep this model at stock height unless you want to be driving around in something that looks completely out of proportion and makes your wheels look tiny...

Good day

i know where your coming from there

coming from a background of design i agree to where you come from in regards to the designers working with enginners to 'create' to say a perfect ride height and design the car around that, and for the car to be 'driveable' and for use everyday

what tends to happen is people lower their car to create a better ride, a firmer ride so it handles better on the road.

take a standard height polo around a corner at a track at say... for argument sake 40mph... then stick a lowered polo with springs on and you get an extra, 7-8mph out of the same corner, then stick a polo with coilovers on, with the correct set up you'll gain a good 10mph out of a corner!

...but i disagree to lowered mk7s looking terrible

i have lowered mine and i feel it looks better, rides better and handles better! - mine is the white 9n3 you see below...

my 2ps worth

i have a pic... borrow from gra-gt - hope you dont mine mate

i think your trying to get blood from a stone here, your saying all that is completely opinion based, and not as all factual

in standard form (in my opinion) the polo gti looks as if it would blow over in a big wind, its tall, narrow bodyshell, coupled with tall, un sporty suspension does nothing for its looks or drive,as a gti market aimed car

my car is lowered on coilovers, and can safely say, it looks a million times better ...

What a waste :( poor polo will be crying inside. You should check your water levels...

Another thing that makes it look bad is you cant see the top of the tyre and the gap in the wheel arch is an awful shape because its been lowered its no longer as symmetrical the gap around the circle of wheel arch looks "odd". Thats possibly one of the key design reasons they look so bad lowered, the wheel arch shape is longer than the other polos, creating a wierd squashed look.

Put it back and it will look much better.

You do of course realise when your driving along and people see some really ridiculous looking ones they think "that looks terrible" yet most of these insane modders are sat driving past thinking people are thinking it looks great or they dont know how great this is... Its not great. Its a mess.

Anyway keep it as high as possible :)

Its an excellent looking car at normal height.

Your entitled to your opinion and you may be partly right, but at the right level of drop, the mk7 Polo can look better than standard. I'd say with some nice subtle 17" alloys it makes the whole car look better too!

However, don't understand why you feel you have to spam 2 seperate topics all about your opinion, then create one of your own!!!

funny you say that, cos when my local dealer had my car back for a day, they had customers commenting how good it looked lower than a standard polo.... and these are members of the public, some old couples, family members and not just some 'insane modder' :?

The black ones dont look as bad actually fair point. Probably because you cant see in the wheel because its black...

Anyway Im not suprised you all take it offensively after you have messed on and paid money to make your car look worse. Perhaps the blacks ones are ok :)

Im off I can see people are going to get annoyed.

If its not factual then the car and all cars would be made like that to start with or at least the GTI models would be and there not...

Also if there is no such thing as good design and only opinions then why bother buying a polo, why didnt you buy a yaris....

----------------------------------------
Also. In reply to whoever, Spam is copying and pasting, its hardly bad saying two similar things in two topics and hten starting one so I didnt create loads of cross posts. Its also hardly the worlds most popular forum so it would cause massive bandwidth problems if anything I was trying to put the entire comment in one topic to save the owners issues.

Anyway like I said im off, youre all right, everyone loves lowered cars they look amazing thats why all cars are designed like that from the factory, cars like ferraris and aston martins are obviously not designed properly since there already really low, perhaps some of the people here could inform real racing / sports cars that they should be lower. OR perhaps those types of cars are DESIGNED to be lower already...but to most of you that means nothing, in which case I dont see why you ever bought the car since you obvious dont care about how it looks.
