Cheapest Engine Converison?

Post by LiverpoloGTi »

Hi
My gearbox is doing my head in (atm its whining like its supercharged) if i get another box it will be my 4th in 18 months

So im looking at other alternatives:

Option 1. Sell the Polo and get something else (but i love my 6n2 and would prefer to keep hold of it if possible)

Option 2. Engine conversion :D Ive had a few quotes all of which were over 5k +VAT for a 180bhp 1.8T, box, ecu, coilovers and exhaust. Now this is more than the value of my car and i think ill have a hard time justifying the expense to my g/f.

If I could get it done for around 3k then maybe just maybe i could do it.

What do you think is possible for 3k and if so any suggestions as to where or any other options available to me?

I recon I could do a DIY conversion for just over 2K if im carefull...Using as many cheap parts from the scrappy as possible...(I found a written off car and salvaged the engine and loom etc...it WAS sat in my garage until thismorning:shock:

But im a fairly competant welder and machinist, ....

You could spend another grand making it go faster, but just a standard engine would be fine!

If I wasnt driving my GTI every day I would consider it, as I love the car to bits and dont fancy getting a bigger car (i.e. golf or new polo GTI)

Have you tried ringing Dubsport? They are relatively local - based in Wigan. They are renouned for doing that type of thing. Not sure of how good they are though so dont quote me.

People say if you want a fast car, buy a fast car, but I'm the other one who likes it too much overall. I'd rather have a 1.8T conversion or a 1.6 on throttle bodies (if the gearbox issue could be got round) than a faster car (of course gimmie an Audi R8 over the Polo anyday ;))

I'd do as much research as possible, so you know EXACTLY what has to be done, and what you need.

Then you'll know what you can do yourself and what you can buy on the cheap to save money.

This is why I'd never consider an engine convo at the moment, I don't know enough about it all.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I got some good news this afternoon, took the car to Black Diamond where I saw this tasty GTI (anyone on here own it? im sure if seen pics of it before)

Anyway BD are going to put in a new box for me next week FOC! (as the one they gave me under warranty was not fit for purpose) :D

So this buys me some time until my next box failure. Im gonna save up some cash and keep on the lookout for parts for the conversion. Which has now become my mission. And if the box lasts till ive paid off the finace then maybe i'll treat my lil GTI to the JBS treatment (or Awseome GTI, as its alot closer and id like to be able to pop in and see the work in prgress)

Mouse, im of the same mindset as you mate, I'd much rather have a 1.8T 6n2 GTI than 5k + trade in value of my Polo of other car. (Box aside it is a cracking little car).

Anyway im well chuffed with BD as I couldn't really afford this atm.

Oh and also, the cheif engineer at BD mentioned that he's planning to cease providing gearboxes for 6n2 GTI's

i would be tempted to try a tdi 150 conversion, just to be different :-D cos they are pretty rapid standard, remap up to 200ish, then you can upgrade turbos, fuel pumps etc. the torque would be immense :-D

It would still sound like a tractor!!!

If you want something a little bit different, how about getting the 1.8t out of an A4 or passat...

It has a transaxle gearbox, so you can wrip out the rear seats and stick the engine in its place.....

The first mid engined polo...

Sitck on a stonking great turbo and some nice big air scoops on the side and you would have one kick ass polo!

haha no not myself....my garage is doing it, he does revo and all performance tuning.

its not being started for a few weeks...the plan we have worked out is to use a whole seat ibiza and practically swap everything over then all i should need is mounts as he seems to think we can use the shafts....but im not so positive. i will let you know though what happens
