Window Tint Law

Post by KarlM »

After just having my tints done, i thought i'd pass on what i found out

Amended regulations governing tinted windows and film came into force on 1 January 2004. They are titled "The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No.5) Regulations 2003" Statutory Instrument No. 3145 and they amend The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. You can get a copy of the regulation from Her Majesty's Stationary Office at www.hmso.gov.uk

These latest Amendment Regulations followed a period of consultation which ended in October 2003. The majority of consultees were in favour of the proposal to amend the regulations to clarify that the 75% visual light transmittance (VLT) level for windscreens and 70% VLT for front side windows also applies to any film, tint or other substance applied to the window.

please also note VLT testers are very crap. should you fail a test ask the police to test there own car. it will fail as well. basically the machine will always read fail on a dull day

Therefore, it will still be legal to attach film to the front side windows of a vehicle provided it does not reduce the VLT to below 70%. The same levels apply to the fitting of tinted glass windows. So tinted glass windows or film have not become illegal whether an offense is committed depends on the levels of light that are transmitted through the tinted glass windows or film.

tbh its put me right off, of getting my windows tinted at all!
i cant see the point in making the rear and the back side windows dark and the front side windows light as hell! it looks toss
you've gotta have all the windows the same darkness/lightness
anyone else agree with me?

yeah ive gotta agree with that, got 2 all or none with window tinting! 8)

From what ive been told it WAS illegal to have any sort of tint (excluding factory) on the front windows?!? also got told 2day (& yes this does happen ie my m8 last nite) if your front windows are down the police CANNOT make u put them up 2 check!!!!! Although this prob will just p*** them off & they will scrutinise every aspect of your car. :?
