53 Polo 1.4 tdi cannot select reverse gear

Can anyone help please?

My wife has a 53 reg 1.4 tdi which cannot be put into reverse gear.

I'v had a look at the linkage under the gear stick and can see that an elbow shaped arm has fallen off - I think because of a missing screw.

I believe this arm is part of the mechanism which allows the gear stick to be pressed down to allow selection of reverse gear.

Has anyone any experience of this problem?

never experienced this on my polo and mine is the 1.4 TDI

But on other cars if your going to buy the gear linkage i think they give you the whole shabang you cant just buy bits for it!

The problem was fixed yesterday by Peter Plehof in Leicester.

He removed the tray, recovered the screw with a magnet and "gave it a bit of welly" to make sure it doesn't happen again. He charged me £20.00!

There aren't many around like him.
