Hey everyone,
Im finally getting my gearbox repleced after months of putting up with the annoying noises its been making. I want to ask a few questions and see whats what etc and get some advice from you guys.
1, How much should i look at paying for a re-con. box and a new clutch with fiting, just so i know im not being screwed.
2, Ive read on the forum about garages putting in 1.4 polo boxes into the gti istead of the gti box, and thus the gear ratios being different and car being slower on acceleration etc. Is there a certain part number to mention to the garage first, befor they stick a 1.4 box in. I'd go spare if i was bent over and therefor i want to pre warn the garage.
3, Clutchs? Any info on what to get or to stick with the vag part.
Well i appreciate any help from anyone,
p.s, if anyone can recommend a garage which have done other gti gearboxs, in the oxfordshire region please enlighten me.
Thanks again,
clarky

First of all, give this a read mate

Brand new gearbox from VW is £900 I think.
A clutch kit will set you back around £90-100. There's a few kits, most popular are Valeo, Sachs and LUK. All of them have received good feedback from what I've heard, and there doesnt seem to be much between them.

IMHO...
Find a decent gearbox specialist who rebuilds boxes and axles...
Get them to REBUILD your gearbox with new bearings etc.... Expect to pay about £350-£400 (Slightly more if they have to take the box out for you).
Whilst its out replace the clutch and release bearing....Expect to pay about £70.... Perhaps more if the gearbox people will fit it whilst they are putting the box back in....
I would not suggest getting a "reconditioned box" as you wont know what its like inside etc....
Also, getting a brand new one from VW sounds stupidly expensive!

Ive had 3 gearboxes in the past 18 months, When my original box went I got a refurbed one from BlackDiamond. It lasted 10k before being replaced under warranty, that one lasted about 600 miles before being replaced very reluctantly under warranty. I've done about 1500 miles on the replacement so far and now and again theres a very faint whine while at high speed
. And BD told me last time that this would be my last box under warranty.
Like others have said get your own gearbox refurbed by a local gearbox specialist, thats what i should have done.
I got a Sach sports clutch kit, it was about £80 from a local motor factors and ive had no complaints with it.
If you dont know where to take your car then try to find a local VW specialist its pretty likely that they will have done other GTI gearboxes or will be able to tell you who to use.
