Does it spill out underneath the car, or back out of the filler hole? When I had a new tank put on it took ages to fill it due to airlocks. This might be the case with yours, possibly caused by a new tank, or running very low on fuel, or as ereeiz said - maybe its split somewhere.

mine has a pattern tank as well & it fits fine.
I had a similar problem but it was because the flap thingy just inside the filler neck had been pushed right down to the bottom.
changing tanks isnt a difficult job really. just make sure to have plenty of small jubilee clips to replace the rusty knackered ones you take off various fuel lines.
change the fuel filter at the same time unless its recently been done.
also, I coated the filler neck & the area it joins onto the tank in sealant to try & stop it corroding later on.
