MK3 GT Vs MK3 Golf CL

Post by concept-e »

Looking at getting either a mk3 gt, or a mk3 1.8 golf cl. Maybe a silly question but which would be quicker, with a few mods (induction kit, exhaust, etc)

Although they differ quite a bit in engine size, my insurance company have quoted me the same price for the 1.8 golf as the 1.3 GT. I think its the "GT" bit which screws me over! And I know that GT's can be quick.

Cheers,

Steve

A Mk 3 GT would be quicker as standard. I think the Golf 1.8 cl may have the same power out put as the GT (not sure on torque), but as it's a lot bigger heavier car hence slower.

I'm biased towards polo's and would say get that. But unless you need a bigger car, then definately go for the GT.

test drive both first. they'll be totally different to drive & to live with.

the polo will be a fair bit faster I'd have thought. much lighter & closer gears. the golf would be a better motorway cruiser, comfyer, more practical etc... depends what you want out of a car. I'd definately go for the GT.

Can't really add anything new, but we used to own a Golf Driver as a family car and my Dad rates my car over the Golf. Says it's far more fun to drive and has done since I got it.

But yes, the Golf would be a better Motorway cruiser. Bigger, more space.

The polo may be a faster car, bu the Golf will be a better car.

Sorry.

Yes, I have a Golf... but its a Mk2 GTI.

The Golf will be bigger inside, more comfortable to spend time in, will be better on motorways bah blah blha..

There are more mods availible for the Golf, and there will be many more second hand upgrades that you could buy.. leather seats, colour coded trim, bigger brakes etc..

Saying that, the Polo is a very fun car. I love mine to bits.

I just don't think that Polo's a serious cars. They are Golf wannabes. And it shows. They aint built as well as Golfs.

Also with the Golf yu will asily be able to upgrade it to VR6 or 1.8T at a later date.

If only the GT came with a 1.6 or 1.4 16v.

1.8CL MK3 is 90Bhp whereas GT is 75. That 15hp Extra Doesnt make up for the extra weight though. If you want to compare official 0-60 times, check out http://www.parkers.co.uk And look under the car reviews section

Ive just checked now and the 1.8 golf is just over half a second slower (11.7 compared to 11.1) Ive also noticed its same Insurance group whihc would explain why you got a similar quote. Id definately go for the GT. Theres also Tax and petrol to consider. Itd cost alot more to run the golf.
