Snapped wheel bolts.....where to get replacements?

Post by tegwin »

Just fitted new brakes to my car....Went to torque up the wheel bolts and one of them snapped....Im sure one of the others will snap if I take it up to the right torque...

So I want to replace all my wheel studs because I cant afford the risk of loosing a wheel at speed...it would HURT!

Do I have to go to VW for the wheel bolts or am I likley to find something that will fit from a more generic source? (Halfords etc)...

Does anyone know the spec for the bolts?

Are they 11mm?....any idea on thread pitch and correct length?

This sucks...my old man has to drive me the 20 miles to work in the morning....BALLS!

I'd like to get some new wheels bolts also. The locking bolts are well tatty and the bolts I got with the Monos are pretty cheap ones.

Did europarts have anything Tegwin?

I went straight to VW to be honest....Figure I would rather have a tried and tested bolt rather than something with an unknown strength....

The standard bolts are around £2.30 each....the locking bolts are around £20 a set...

I have just bought 12 standard ones and will stick with my existing locking ones...

With 3 new bolts on each wheel done to the correct torque I will feel much safer...

My old man had to drive me to work today.....lol...that was weird!

Not me....My torque wrench is set to 80 Lbs/ft......as per the haynes manual....it took significantly less than that to snap the bolt!

Im sure someone at some point has seriously over done them causing them to stretch and weaken...

The new bolts went in with no hassle and took the torque perfectly...

80lbs/ft is bang on!

i know what damage loseing a wheel (or 2 can do) it happened 2 a friend of mine while i was in the car in his gti! luckly his polo was slamed so both the front wheels couldnt escape and were kept in the arches! just made a mess of his wings and front suspention (and our pants!!) lol

if any1 is intrested ill post the pics up later!

The old wheel bolts are actually quite amusing...

Some of them are around 4mm longer than the new ones and around 2mm thinner in the middle where they have stretched.....

LOL!
