Im waiting for anti-rust primer to dry and thought no better way to waste time. So heres what i have been doing.

As everyone here is propably aware. The VW polo MK4 is a good car, however it does have its problems, but what old car doesnt???

Anyway, i have done a few things to my car to make it look better. However now its coming to the time where im having to correct all the faults. I have allready had to clean the body throttle and change the thermostate, but now its time to change the RUST. I have let it slip past as i have been so busy. But now its coming to an end!!!

Rust was spreading above above the wheel arch, paint was flaking and it was pretty obvious i had to do some work. I then peeled the paint back.

Next I got to work sanding the rust away with wet and dry. I experimented with some other sand papers but found wet and dry was the most usefull.

After sanding i dried the wheel arch and prepared it for spraying.

Then it was TIME!!!!!!!! TIME TO SPRAY THE ANTI-RUST PRIMER!!!!

I waited roughly 15 mins before spraying the secong coat and then waited 30 mins to spray the next (as instructed on the tin)

Hopefully you can see the colour of the primer becoming stronger with eash layer being applied.

After roughly 4 coats i thought i would call it a day. I may sand it down a little tomorrow and add a few coats but i will see it in the day light then make my mind up.

i have used that zinc primer from halfords.

however, after like 2 months, the rust came back!..

any updates on this cos i have some rust i want to remove on my car n thought about doing it this way and wasnt sure about the colour blending laquer etc

My rear arches are ridden with rust,,,,the bodyshop have welded new ones in.treatments and so on are ok but are never more then a temporary fix,,,,just delays it for a while.

I was busy fixing the central locking pump. I havent got round to buying the spray paint.

but to the best of my knowledge it is solved. Im waiting for rust to come back... because then i will bring the big CANNOn out.

If it comes back (i really doubt) but if it does... than the drill will be coming out... and i will i use a metal sander part atttached to a drill... that surely will get ride of it???

same here I got a paint bubble on my rear quarter panel i killed off the rust with a grinder, got some zinc rust stopping primer and now its back!

Having said that at the same time i touched up a similar mark on the drivers door and it hasnt rusted up.. meh

going to have to get the big guns out on my patch of rust its super ugly.
need to grind it down AGAIN and find some rustoleum or something proven then maks it off and coat it to death.

If only i was any good at bodywork I'd just buy 10 rattle cans of matte blue and spray the whole damn thing hehe

DAMM!!

Cant believe i did that in oct 2006!!!! Doesn't feel that long ago!!!

Well 2m i will get pictures of how well i kept out the rust... i beat a fair bit of rust... but a tiny, tiny bit still their, that i need to get ride off.

Just thought i should update this again.. plus the other things i have done...

Because of an oil leak from the engine...

Rocker cover was taken off... and...

Cleaned and replaced gasket

Then after the leaking continuing from lower down...

Head GASKET REPLACED
+
TIMMING BELT.

I have also sprayed parts of the interior.

Iv also had an attempt of polishing the rocker cover gasket..

PLANS...

Get ride of annoying squeaking in Rear Drums.

Putting a new electric window motor in drivers door.

Get the Grill colour coded

Last of all... sticking on the rear spoiler!!!

I have had the lower Head gasket replaced as well as a new timing belt put in.

As the leak has now stopped the engine looks like this

So cleaning my car on saturday and enjoying the good weather and trying to take my attention of the annoying hangover I had....

I started scrubbing!!!

And the enging now looks like this!!! LOL

Couldn't get a mirrored finnish by just sanding and polishing so settled for this. next plans are to spray the cover of the air filter read. I know this is not original and been done alot, but just felt i wanted to give it a go!

Engine's looking mint mate - well worth the effort you put in. Once you've given it a good clean, it's easier to keep it that way. You can't beat a clean engine! Makes working on it a damn sight more pleasurable too.

All this reminds me to get working on mine

The whole arch is fillered from the previous owner meaning its a hefty job for me. It definetly settled in! Furthermore, my rocker cover seals leaking oil which I need to replace before get the cover shiny.

This post so reminds my of the rust issue on my back wheel arch, its really bad and the rust on my drivers sill. Need to get it done asap but its gunna cost an arm and a leg

wish I could do it all myself shame I cant

Never say can't, start off with a wire brush then 320 wet and dry, then when you get the worst off move onto 400 wet and dry remember to use plenty of water with the wet and dry finish with 600 grade, when you have got this far treat area with a rust cure product, you might have to just skim coat with some filler and sand down just to give yourself a smooth finish.
remember to feather the edges of the old paint to blend in, you might have to go back a bit further on the surrounding paint work, prime up area and them cut back primer with 600 grade keep doing this till you have a really smooth finish, then apply top coat in small dusting coats try not to apply too much in one go as your will get runs and sags, then it's just a matter of letting paint dry and then cutting back and polish.
Thatâ€™s the basics, Iâ€™m sure if any of the guys who are body shop trained could add.
That rocker box cover looks good, depending on the grade of aluminium used you might be able to get a mirror finish by using a polishing soap kit and a pillar drill mounted buffing wheel, Iâ€™ll give mine a go and post the results, but after restoring a 1977 Kawasaki using this method on the cases I can say itâ€™s a long job

Today, took the air filter off and found a fair/small amount of oil leaking out of the throttle body???? can any one tell me if this is normal???

I cleaned this oil and the oil inside the air filter... look at this!!! awful

Then got spraying.

And then waited for it to dry...

Then whacked it back on my car... AND.... not as impressed as i thought i would be... looks normal..
