Exhaust Emissions Warning Light

Post by Overseer »

Had this light come on last night, after driving around most of the day. Car seems to drive/sound fine, so I'm not quite sure there is a problem.

I did a search and came across a thread saying I should be filling up with 98 RON petrol - oops, didn't know that. Could this be the cause or is it something?

I'm going to Sheffield tonight for the weekend (about a 2 hour drive) will I be ok to drive?

Cheers if anyone can help

Oh, by the way. The light is on constantly, not flashing like the manual says.

Wouldnt panick.... And no, the type of fuel should make no difference...

I used to use high octane fuel, but since the prices have gone crazy....I dont!

Possibly a lambda issue..

The only way to figure this out is to get VAG COM plugged in!

Provided your engine temp is fine, and your oil looks ok... and the engine runs fine..

I wouldnt worry too much....drive to sheffield...perhaps dont try and hammer the engine..

But yes, go to VW, or buy the VAGCOM....

I've had that light on for over 2 months now!, every now and again it goes off for a short while. I've got so used to seeing the light the dash looks weird when it's not illuminated.

Oh yeah and the car sailed through its MOT emissions test with the light on. Drives just as it always has done and mpg doesnt appear to have suffered, so im not too concerned about it at all.

Well the light has strangely turned itself off now.

After spending most my day at work searching the forums about the issue, I think I'm going to try and use V-Power, to see if it makes any difference.

Fingers crossed it stays off.

Mines doing the exact same thing has been for around 6 weeks, been into VW and they said its the lamda sensor. It triggered five faults-something like, running rich, low on performance, low on oxyen etc. All related to the one sensor, it's about £200 i think and i'll be getting mine booked in shortly. As said its fine to drive unless the light starts flashing and just dont rag your car.

£200 you should be able to get a universal one for less than 50 notes, the job is a doddle, think they are a 17mm ring spanner disconnect old wiring and cut, remove old sensor, fit new sensor, resolder wiring from new sensor to old loom and job done, the light should clear itself...

NB remove and fit when stone cold!!!

It's definately a sensor, one of the most common sensor failures in all modern VW's
