Wouldn't do any harm, some of the pumps at our work have them on the gearbox drain plugs.

Isnt the standard plug magnetic?....when ever i pull it out it has metal dust stuck to it....


If you dont have a magnetic one, then it might be a good idea...

I've never really noticed. I just picked up an oil filter and plug from VW yesterday so will check if it is magnetic. Oil change isn't due until 400 miles time
