VW unveils new Gol

Post by Babe RuthLess »

Hi everyone, I'm back after a long while...

This post is to present you the third generation of VW's South American bestseller, the Gol. It slots below the Polo in VW's current Brazilian lineup, and it's unlikely that you'll ever see one in Europe. But I'll post about it anyway. :D

The Volskwagen Gol has been Brazil's best-selling car for the past 21 years. For this new generation, VW Brasil dug deep into the group's parts bin to come up with a car that's loosely based on the current Polo/Fox platform, but with a front assembly (suspension/steering/subchassis) from the new PQ25 platform (new Ibiza/Fabia and next year's Polo) and rear suspension carried over from the previous Gol.

Initially, two Total Flex engines are available: 1-litre and 1.6-litre VHT, with 72bhp(using petrol)/76bhp(using alcohol) and 101/104bhp respectively. "Total Flex" is VW-speech for flexible-fuel engines that can run on either petrol or alcohol (ethanol) or any mixture of the two. These are the norm in Brazil BTW.

Notchback and sportier 3-door versions will be launched later in the year.

I'm sure I posted pictures of previous Gols somewhere in here, for those interested in the changes. Here's the new car:

That's it... Maybe - maybe - VW might sell the Gol as a low-cost option to compete with Renault's Dacia Logan in certain European markets.

Its one of those designs that doesn't really grab you. Certain elements look ok, shape is very much like the current Astra. Interior looks good too.

Seems to run high, i know some of that is an optical illusion due to white car & black sills etc.

Still, it would be good to see it in the flesh, slammed to the deck in flash red with some tasty rims!

The dashboard/door card design looks suspiciously like a Mk6/7 Fiesta

Old Gol looks like hybrid of Mk3 + Mk5 Polo and Mk3 Golf
