You guys are definitley telling me what I want to hear. I love the mk3 coupe shape, and a gt would be great. I think slightly cheaper to buy over a mk3 golf too. However, as we are on the topic of "smoking", I am basically trying to get as quicker car as I can with cheap(ish) insurance. Any ideas???

How will a g40 do alongside say a mk2/3 golf gti? I know the insurance is high, but is it worth saving up so that for once I can actually do the "smoking"!!!! Or is it better to go for something slightly cheaper, e.g, GT and just do that up so it is as quick as possible for what it is??

Cheers for all the advice, keep it coming! (Major car/life changing decision here!)

One thing to add, answering Robz question, Id use the car for a bit of both: Motorway and town driving. Although probably 65% town stuff. I have a mk3 cl coupe 1.0l at the moment, and I have decided that in the year or so I have taken out before Uni I want to arse about with Veedubs. I find although quite nippy for what it is (has a performance exhaust/air filter etc) , it is still slow and can feel a bit like a tin can, and doesn't like it when I load it up with mates! So I would like a car which feels a bit more solid and quicker-must be quicker!!

Well, so far my G40 has eaten:
God knows how many focus', Vectras, a few escorts, the usual nobbers in their Paxos, novas, corsas, metros, minis, fiestas, an Uno Turbo, mk2 16v Golf, mk2 8v Golf.
It's had a good go at my mates mk2 Golf VR6, anothers Corrado VR6, a civic type-R (I say have a go, but he was probably just toying with me :x )
and more that I can't think of.
I can't stress enough how much fun it is to thrash about the twisties, it's just as composed as a Golf I'd say on the motorway (It will be modified I assume?) although it will be noticably twitchier, especially 110mph+ (according to the speedo anyway, oh and not on her majesties highways  ). I've only had 4 mk2 Golf GTi 8v's and a mk1 1.6 Golf GTi though, not a mk3.
Mk3 Golfs are lardy, don't handle, and are the worst looking of the lot imo, (it's not a bad looking car though!).
I say save and get a G40, you won't regret it (apart from maintenance :x ). If not then get a GT, there's a kid near me that had a std GT and it wasnt far off one of my mk2 Golfs! (would have beaten me through lanes though).
Lastly the mk3. The only mk3's I'd have are the VR6, or the 16v. :)
End of essay :P

If I got a GT or a G40 it will be modified. I just want to get something which is worth modding. With my 1.0l I wanted to get a full system with the cat taken out, but whats the point for like 3 more bhp! Where as the G40 it is definitely worth it. Well I think its time to save, I will update you lot when I go G40!

Whats the general asking price for a decent G40 then?

One last question on the topic of "smoking"! My mate has just recently bought a MG ZR, the 1.4 injection model. I am hoping a G40 could out do it, because he thinks he is unbeatable at the mo, and I need to teach him a lesson or two!

Cheers,

Im 20 with 2 yrs NCB and its £810 thpf+t for me on my G40 with HiC (ask for Phil or pete, say you are a club gti membner, read performance VW, the golf, vw driver, your a member of the no-rice forum, clubgti, performance vw, etc).

Generally I've found that a G40 will waste any car up to a 1.8 na. Even larger engined cars too (but they are nrmally fat heavy things, a Granada for example
