Issues - please help!

I have them....


..big fat ones at the moment and they come in red Polo size/shape!


The story goes like this, a few weeks back my Polo was running fine then on the way back from work it begins to make a clunking noise, as if I was riding a bicycle with something pinging against the spokes.

In addition to the noise the car begins to vibrate very abruptly and to the point that the whole car is shaking :shock: . So I get it to my local specialist and for some reason the following morning on the way over it's fine again, they give it a good looking over and a service but they can't find any problems.

So last weekend we drive over the Newmarket from home (Bath area) and it's doing the same thing! :cry: I drop the car off again today and it's back to being fine so again the Garage can't find any problems although they do mention the Gearbox seems to be ticking very quietly.

Anyway I give a VW Gearbox specialist a call to get there verdict and they tell me it sounds like the box is giving up and it's that that's causing the issues! :roll:

So what do people think, I've done a search and found similar symptoms that have suggested a CV joint but I know mine are fine.

Also these threads end with no mention of the resolution being found, has anyone experienced symptoms like mine that have caused the gearbox to fail?

Also has anyone heard of Belwoods? They are the people who diagnosed the symptoms as the fault gearbox.

Any suggestions would be helpful, I know the gearbox is an issue but want to be sure it's this before I send £600 is on sorting it.

hmm

couple a things id check 1st and obvious ones too...

wheel nut loose? front or rear?

trashed wheel bearing?

loose d/shaft?

box oil level?

im not sure if these have them but mk2 gti golfs have a balance weight on one of the d/shafts and as the miles went by they had a liking to being otherwhere than on the 'shaft.

Done all except the box oil, and everything is fine :roll:

Checked for loose bushes?...

Had the wheels balanced?

Checked that the split rim bolts are not loose?

Had new polybushes fitted 2 months ago and they are fine,

wheels balanced when fitted 2 months ago and they are new non-split rims :cry:

it would be worth checking the wheel balancing again, because a weight could have come off - its easily done. Is it around any particular speed or is it totally intermittent?

I had thought the same, I think I’ll get it checked and the geometry on Saturday.

It's at any speed so seems less likely to be a weight but as you said worth a check.

It's a bit difficult to tell but I'm sure the loud ticking only seems to happen in gear and then when out of gear it stops but there is still the vibrating/sensation of there being something not right as if I was constantly driving over a very abrasive road surface.

Anther story from my old MK5...

I had the timing belt done (have you recently?) and as i was going down the motorway i started to here this noise (like a bottle on a push bike) so i stopped and had a look - and to my shock the engine mount on the side where the timing belt was had came lose and was rubbing on the top crankshaft pully.... it had snapped the 3 engine bolts and the mount had slipped... had to get new bolts and mounts from VW and that took 4 weeks all because the garage who done it were meant to replace the 3 bolts when doing the belt - so it says in Autodata...

Haven't had any work like that carried out but I had thought about the engine mounts being at fault, although it all looks straight and I asked the garage to look at these specifically to which they have said it's all in order.

This is one of those issues that I can see taking a very long-time to sort and a fair amount of ££££ :cry:

So much for my cheaper work car! The TVR is more reliable :x

Well, no one could really tell exactly what is causing the noise and vibration. So we've narrowed it down to the diff/gearbox.

I've ordered a new one and will be fitting it mid next week once it's in then I'll know if it was that :roll:

I had wierd vibrating like this before and thought it was gearbox related, it turned out it was my flywheel.

They are all fine.

In terms of the flywheel, this will be checked when the box is out. :roll:
