I recently purchased a vw polo 1.2s (year of registration Oct 2002 with 10,900 miles on the clock) from a private owner. I donot have any type of warranty on the car and the service spanner light has strated comming on when I switch my engine on. I wanted to know whether I should have a service done at the local garage or a VW dealer. Also after looking closer at the engine I have noticed a very small amount of oil 7 inches below the top of the engine near the timing belt. Do I have a problem with the crank shaft seal or is this something else and is it very expensive to get fixed by a VW dealer or should I go to a private dealer since I do not have a warranty. Any help would be much appreciated.

If your car is an October 2002 car its should still be under the 2 year VAG warranty and 1 year dealer warranty. Even if its an import.
Getting your car serviced at a non genuine dealer is a bit of a grey area. Legally you can now do it without it invalidating your warranty. But personally, I'd take it to a dealer and pay the premium as I can't see any indepandent garage having much of a clue on working on the new 3 cylinder engine and you can guarantee they'll fill it up with 0W-40 oil rather than 0W-30
Re: Your oil symptons: It sounds like you definately have a leaking crankshaft oil seal, which will be covered under warranty FOC. But make sure they replace the cambelt and any other belts which have been covered in oil.

I purchased this car from a private owner last month but didnot recieve any details of or about the warranty. Can I still get my oil problem resolved by VW as I am not the original owner even though the car is still within the warranty period and how much would a 10,000 mile service cost. Thanks for your help.
I've just had mine serviced for £160.
It's worth checking if you are on fixed servicing or variable servicing.
On variable servicing your polo will tell you when it's ready for a service other than having to take it in every year or 10,000... Mine went in on 16,000 for it's first service, Although some go in as early as 6,000 it depends on how hard you drive it.
Yeah, the car will still be covered under a 3 year warrenty so you should be covered, no doubt.

Before you take it in though, have a look through the forum to find out other common problems you may have on your car without knowing about, they should fix it all at the same time then.

Thanks everyone for your help, I am petty new to buying a fairly new car.
However there was one bit of information I have probably forgot to mention. When I purchased the car I didnot recieve the owner handbook or service history ( the tosser dealer said he would post but has lost it). Is there any way I can find out whether I have any warranty left on the car and can the above problems fixed be fixed under warranty. Your help would be much appreciated. (car registered Oct 2002).

As said in all the other posts, its covered by 3 years warranty if its a UK sourced car otherwise its 2 years if its an import.
It doesnt matter if you aint got the book cos thats just for your reference as VW have it all on computer and you can buy replacements anyway and the'll stamp the service book etc for you.
