fitting a headunit

i am thinking of installing a alpine head unit either a single din or a double,
but i have been told by several garages that when the car has a nonstandard head unit in and they come to plug their dignostics in the blows the ecubecause it turnes a contact into a live feed is this ture or is there a lead to stop this happing?

ive never heard of that before but i have recently found the correct adapter that stops the constant live feed etc. Only thing is its £50

it is a w reg polo 1.4 16v
